Hun seems to mean different things to different people:
1. All Rangers fans
2, bigoted Rangers fans
3. all bigots
4. all bigoted protestants
5. all protestants
I would find 2 the most acceptable. If you use it for 5 you are a bigot yourself IMO. Not sure about the rest. Thats why I rarely use the term. Anyone with the necc. skills feel free to make this into a poll.
Discuss what is a 'hun' in the TalkCeltic Pub area at TalkCeltic.net.

I use hun all the time tbh,and it's not a religious thing whatsoever for me.Half my immediate family is Protestant including my father and by christ does he call them huns.
For example Jock Stein was not a hun,Lorenzo Amoroso certainly was.Back in the 50''s they used to call us huns too btw.
We are not the only fans who call them huns either
Doesn't it stem from hunlike behavior.Attila and the like and then is was used as a derogatory term for the Royals and their German links -

Perhaps the most pointless thread yet on this site. Shut it down
-
Thought it was fair enough to ask in the pub what people understand the word means. Its useful to know what a word is understood to mean when using it or hearing someone else is using it, otherwise its just a noise. Genuinely interested. Hoped Talkceltic folk could have a mature discussion on this. Anyway, if you think it will be abused you have my blessing to close the thread.

I would go for number 1, all Rangers fans. I would refer to myself as a tim but I have no religious leanings, especially towards the catholic direction. Even Bhoy is a direct reference to being Irish catholic ie Tim Malloy.
Although all words are relative to their conext as I know plenty of Asian boys who are quite happy to be called Pakis as long as it isn't accompanied by a "you * Packi *" and spitting at them. Similarly, shouting "you dirty * orange hun *" at a stranger is slightly different to asking "do you support the huns?"
These terms can be used both as a term of abuse and as a sign of symbolic constructionalism of a community. -

I just use "Huns" for every person who is related to Rangers FC. No religious motive, none politics.
Like scousers, or scums (Man United) and so on.

Some people will just take things the wrong way; that was the point i was trying to make. A thread like this convinces any Rangers supporter wivisting this site that we are as bad as them, as from outside the Celtic supporting community that is the way these responses would be taken

I quite like the odd controversial thread as long as people can be sensible with their posts.
And remember that if you complain about a thread by posting in it, you push it back to the top of the page. -
