Or so says Peli, anyway.

He could be right though.
When Pele played the Brazilian League was probably the best and he was the best player there, when he played in World Cups with the other best, he was the best player there, won it 3 times and is the top scorer in its history and when he played European teams Benfica and AC Milan the Champions of Europe he scored 7 goals in 3 games against them. -

International football isn't the be all and end all. I hate how people think Messi has to win a World Cup to become one of the best players ever.
-
I think it's probably unfair to say that Messi isn't as good on the basis of world cups given that one player doesn't make a team. Pele was a key part of Brazil's world cup winning sides, but not the be all and end all. I still think Pele's the best ever though, Messi would come third in my book, behind him and Cruyff.

But as for Messi, I think it's just a shame he's Argentinian coz they'll never win a world cup. But that shouldn't stop him being the greatest, or one of.
People seem to forget that football players are technically better these days than they were back then, which imo makes it much more difficult to play now.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 20, 2012 -
Self publicists don't come bigger than Peli. Personally I think it's premature to say Messi is the best ever - not because on the WC 'issue' - because he is only 24(?) and who knows what will happen to him over the next ten years. If he was to never get near the WC but retires with six or seven Balon d'Ors and six or seven CL medals then I don't think any reasonable person could say that he wasn't the greatest. At the minute I think it's close, but the fact that at his age we are even having the discussion tells you a bit about how good he is.
-
yes he is
-
Pele did score an absolutely ridiculous amount of goals. Whats Messi's tally?
-
Senile old man, can't believe he claims he won three World Cups when he got injured the first game of one of them. You'd think a man of his supposed class would have the humility to concede that he didn't do anything to win the '62 World Cup. He is just spouting nonsense because Messi is the greatest ever.
-
That's class, that sort of arrogance is hilarious.

I've always hated that man.
Maradona CSC -
I think that this Barcelona side is the greatest side ever, and Messi is the most talented individual player in it. I think that says it all.
I think that it's impossible to give an objective order in which they rank, but if you ask me Pele, Maradona, Cryuff and Messi are the "fantastic four" in the history of football, so to speak.
And for what it's worth, Messi's three Champions League winners medals is the modern version of three World Cups in 1970. The World Cup, frankly, is no longer the peak of world football. -
Of course, for him to say it it obviously comes across as extremely arrogant but as someone who didnt live to see Pele play, is there much difference between the 2? 1,283 goals is absolutely outrageous.
