pele must be smoking the same weed as aly mccoist its like comparing an * player to this day and age footballer..... aye n his day pele was the best but if he was to play in this day and age am afraid he would never have scored half the ammount he scored........... in his era he was decent coz they played with a wind blower

in this day in age in technical terms pele couldnt lace his boots, no were near the same standard imo

if people think pele is a better player than messi then they are clearly deluded and dumbdstruch, pele would be lucky to score 15 goals a season in la liga........... 2 many old timers on here boasting how a players better than what he really is/was because they watched him live etc

Pele is indeed high, high on his own achievements. Wouldn't have been accomplished without finding himself with such fine other footballers, as well. Even Garricha was a better player, and the man was disabled.

Nostalgia plays a big part in that though. Once a player stops playing, their legend only ever gets bigger. Once Messi retires, the quiet games he has will be long forgotten.

Not to mention that folk that watched Pele will want him to be the best because he's of their age. :50:

Ultimately though, it's a pointless argument. 2 different players, in 2 different eras. Just appreciate the genius while you can.

    My old mans a Prov...............oh wait,wrong speak.

My old Man is from the Pele era,he says Messi is on course to be the most "mystical" (his words,no got a clue what he means) player he has seen.

I think the amount of kicking Messi gets, and he does not make a big deal of it....................ah * it.................two great players,i'm just glad i have witnessed one of them play.

We're doubly lucky, cos in our era we can watch Messi in real time pretty much every week.

I guess in Pele's era they would see clips mostly, or hear tell of his exploits...

The fact pele has come out and said such a thing instantly makes messi a better player/professional in my eyes.

Maradona was a great player obviously but when I watch him I dont see a player who is better than Platini, Zico, Ronaldinho, Cruyff etc

I think because he had a couple of stand out moments and was a show off type of player when there wasnt many around he gets more praise than warranted.

a couple of stand out moments?your kiddy aint ye.if you dont mind me asking how old are you?im 40 so seen him in his prime playing for barca and napoli and at napoli in particular he was a sensation at a time when italian hatchetmen tried to do him evey week.the players you mention are outstanding footballers but all played in amazing teams aswell.platini isnt even the best french player from that generation because tigana was better than him.its all about opinion but to say a couple of stand out moments is mad.if you can get a copy of the mexico 86 world cup you will see what im talking about.:50:
