Tin hat is truly on here.
Is Henrik going to go down in history as one of the absolute greats or is his legend still burning because he he is so recent?
Let me explain.
People remember the likes of Jinky, Stein, Maley, Burns, McNeill because they gave pretty much their whole life to Celtic or they won the big cup with us.
Is there actually a higher level than legend at this club to separate the likes of Henke from people who devoted their life to the club?
John Clarke for example I would put above a lot of people at the club past and present because he just didn't care what he was assigned to do he just wanted to be around the club.
I hope I have explained this right, it's my beer night so...
Put it this way, Henke is much more fondly remembered than McGrory but not McNeill or Jinky.
Is that because so much time has passed between McGrory or do you think Henke will be as legendary in 60 years as say Burns or McStay?
Is there another level of greatness to people who devoted their lives to Celtic to those who just were exceptional players and do you think they are as fondly remembered?

yes our first foreign legend id also include lubo in that as the 2nd
5 goals in 3 European finals and he scored 2 in 1 game -
No question he will. He's one of the greatest players to ever pull on the Hoops and his goalscoring record means his place in Celtic folklore is assured.
I'd put Henrik well ahead of the likes of Paul McStay if I was asked to compile a list of Celtic legends. -
I don't dispute that.
I'm just wondering if their is a higher level of legend status reserved for the truly exceptional either through skill or loyalty? -

He will definitely be remembered and revered by future generations of supporters in the way that the likes of McGrory, McNeill and Jinky are remembered by the current generation.

All talk about whos a Legend and whos not is pretty irrelevant to me.
When I tell my grand kids about players it will include probably everyone from Larsson to Stefan Mahe, so they'll know of loads of players like Ledley and Kelvin Wilson.
Larsson will always be mentioned with players like Dalglish, Lubo, Murdoch, Sutton, Jinky, Lennox, Gemmell, McGrory etc as the best of the best. -
James McGrory has the greatest scoring record ever, probably never be beaten but he never seems to get much of a mention outwith Willie Maley.
If McGrory left Celtic 10 years ago we would all be waxing lyrical about him still.

Ok, is there is an upper legend status that is reserved for great players who also devoted most of their life to Celtic?

I always respect your opinion, to me you are one of the best posters on here and after all these years I have never had a reason to disagree with you until now. Henrik is one of my all time favorite players but to say he is well ahead of Paul McStay is absolute nonsense. McStay to me is the last of a dying breed, a man willing to sacrifice his career for the club he loves, how many other of our greats over recent years can say that?

When I talk about growing up and supporting celtic as who has gave me the most happiness and the greatest player I have witnessed it is henrik larsson..
He was my idol untill an always will be..
A true great and a celtic one..
He didn't give celtic his life but he gave 7 years when many(if not all)of the top european clubs would have been circling and going to United and winning the champions league with barca proves that..
In an era where everything is caught on video,youtube etc there is no doubt the future generations of celtic fans will all hold him in the high regard we all do..
As for is there a different level of legend,I'd say yes..
Like jinky,McNeil etc are a higher level of legend than say dalglish.. -
I see what you're saying mate. The likes of the Lions and Tommy come under this bracket.

The problem with McGrory is that hardly anyone is old enough to have been around when he was playing! His name is immortalised in song though and he still comes up in conversation whenever the subject of Celtic legends is raised.
It'll probably be the same for Henrik Larsson 100 years from now.
I wouldn't call it an "upper status" but I'd say there should be some sort of separate category for people who devote their lives to Celtic.
Tommy Burns would be the most obvious example. He wasn't a Celtic legend as a footballer but as a Celt, and a man, he was a legend in every measurable way. John Clark(who you mentioned) would be another guy who should be afforded legendary status just because of how much of his life he has devoted to Celtic. -
When it comes to living and breathing Celtic, of course he is not on the same level as the likes of Burns, McStay and Clark. Those guys literally gave a large part of their lives to the club.

Another legend,and completely celtic as are all the mcstay's.. -
I know it's not your point Sean but there is endless footage
of Henrik in his prime doing the business,this makes it
easier to show how good he is.
Unfortunately not much on mcgrory's era,a lot of the footage
for the Lions generation is * as well.
The ones you mentioned are all special to me,& most others on here, but i get what you are saying about longevity with the club counting for something.
Maybe the long serving ones are legends+ :icon_mrgreen: -
