It was never a debate for me to be honest. 35 years old, 7 goals and 3 assists in 7 games. Frightening.

No chance. Maradona will always be better. Played on worse pitches, had defenders kicking lumps out of him and single handedly won the 1986 world cup scoring an amazing goal. Messi is a great player but for me, Maradona was better. But opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one! Enjoy your ChristMessi celebrations anyway! :)

The Phoenix Black Lives Matter
Anyone with two functioning eyes and a brain would have known this even before today.
Messi is not just goals - it's assists, playmaking, dribbling, movement, passing, spatial awareness. It's different level stuff.
Delighted that he's cemented it today though.Sgt Neppers*, Garrymac1888, Lewis Kerr and 8 others like this. -

But it's certainly not Ronaldo.
Between Messi and Diego. -

Messi (at the age of 35) has just dragged Argentina to a WC victory - so Maradona isn’t alone there.
He’s also been the best player in the world for 10-15 years. Winning countless trophies both individual and team. And if he scores 40 goals in a season it’s seen as underwhelming.
Maradona, as incredible as he was, could only dream of a career like that.PaddyJamieson, King of Kings and Slater67 like this. -

There are no comparable players in history to Lionel Messi anymore, every wee doubting argument anyone had went today forever.PaddyJamieson likes this. -

What Ronaldo produced during his Real Madrid years - especially between the likes of 2009 and 2014 was utterly outrageous. But at the same time Messi has just always been that wee bit better for me.
It's tough for me to compare the likes of Pele and Maradona to him though. I didn't see them week after week, at international tournament after international tournament. Their achievements are of course legendary, but not being able to experience them live makes it, for me, unfair to try and make a comparison. -
