What people forget is + “ oh messi played with a great Barcelona team, xavi, iniesta, puyol played with Barcelona from 1998-2005 and they basically won nothing, Valencia and more so obviously Real Madrid won the titles then, messi came in 2005/6 season as a regular player and 9 years later they won 7 la liga titles,4 champions league titles, 5 copa del reys and 3 world clubs and w4 World Cup titles , xavi and iniesta became great players because they were playing with messi, certainly excellent players but both admit they wouldn’t have been near the players they were if they hadn’t played with messi, people disrespect the fact that managers put at least 2 to 3 players onto messi which didn’t really phase him, he was still unstoppable a, but by doing that it gave them so much space because so many people were on messi they could play the tik a tak style, messi basically made Barcelona a major force again

Just say watched messi as a fairly young boy, my son seen him last time, my wee dad aswell that was Sunday, either Celtic park or an away game we always meet up but after Sunday roast it was messi time boy is an absolute genius and even at 35, and before anyone argues with me I never seen pele, a did as a very very young boy see Maradona v England mind my hoose aw going mental, Maradona performance in 86 World Cup will never be surpassed, but remember messi is 10 years older, hate the phrase won the World Cup single handedly, think the 3 scorers, in the World Cup final in 1986, brown, valdano and burruchagia would disagree with , but on the other hand if Maradona wasn’t playing they wouldn’t have got to the final in the first place, say the same this year, everybody played their part but in my opinion if messi wasn’t playing a don’t think Argentina would have got near the finals

Napoli were far from average and neither were the Argentina sides he played in. That is one of the worst myths when discussing the greats.

It hasn’t been a realistic debate in years. It’s pure nostalgia to say otherwise.

As nice as it is to put the icing on the cake of an incredible career, he beats Diego hands down in terms of every metric and has done so over a far longer time period, in an age where the game is faster, the athletes are stronger, technically superior and tactically years ahead.

He’s been the best player in the world for the best part of 15 years. Incredible in any sport, but obscene when you consider it’s the sport with the deepest talent pool in the world, by a mile.

Undisputed GOAT and has been for years. No exaggeration to say he’s changed the game and done things that were assumed to be impossible prior to him doing them.

We often hear about how great Messi's team mates are at club level, almost as an attempt to devalue his individual brilliance.

Yet Messi has never played with anyone who has won the Ballon D'or.

Ronaldo got that privilege at both club and international level - Figo, Modric, Benzema.

Pure joy. I'm 31 and fully expect not to see another player like Messi ever again.

Genius, artist. The best passer, dribbler, finisher, with the greatest vision, sense of space, and tactical understanding of any player on the planet for the last 15 years.

I don't give a * if I'm being sentimental. This is the sport I love and outside of Celtic Leo is the player who has given me the most joy. A gift.

Hasn't been in question for a long time for me. He's put a line in the sand so far ahead I can't see how anyone will come close. Could watch his highlight reels all day.

He may be the GOAT. He may have set the bar so high that nobody in the history of the sport will match it in hundreds of years. However, if he scores against celtic again, I'll break his leg :fear:

    Viva ronoldhino! :56:

Argentina could've went out in the group stage and he'd still be the GOAT by a distance.
Who's the second is a much more interesting debate.
