    Atletico Madrid have moved a step closer to signing Celtic striker Georgios Samaras as the Spanish club search for a forward to support Diego Costa.

    The La Liga title contenders, who take on Barcelona in Europe’s match of the weekend on Saturday night, sent Leo Baptistao for a medical at Betis on Friday with a view to a loan deal.

    Clearing the former Rayo Vallecano forward off the books gives coach Diego Simeone space in his squad and - thanks to Betis paying a £1million loan fee and £750,000 in wages – ready cash to fund a swoop for Samaras.

    Hope he gets a good move. I think he will surprise a few people if he gets a move to La Liga or Serie A and Atleti's counter-attacking style would suit him perfectly.

    Agree, but I think they'll probably buy two, with Sammy as the back-up to the other. Either that or he's the best they can afford. Doubt they've only a million to spend, though.

    Aye, he might be used as a back up - maybe they are seeing something we aren't.

    However they earn £42 million a year in Televsion rights, they aren't paupers. I imagine their gate receipts are up this season aswell.

    I'll be gutted to see the big man leave. Wish him all the best though. He's been a great servant to the club and he'd be crazy to knock back Atletico if they are indeed in for him.
