Been watching a few old celtic dvds and I'm asking myself, which side is better?
I think the quality and potential of our current squad is higher than Martin's.
Some face to face:
Hedman/Douglas... vs Boruc. No doubt for me, this point goes to Strachan.
- Keeper:
Of course Jackie and Dolph Mjällby were playing under MoN's regime. But Wilson, Naylor and Big Mick are not weaker, they have even got the more potential. I say it's a draw (yet). 1 point each.
- Defenders:
MoN had some very great names, Lubo, Petrov, Lambert etc. But I expect our midfield today even stronger.. especially with Nakamura, Tommy G and McGeady. Lennon and Thomo don't count, Lennon still is a key player. Could add Maloney to Strachan's side, since he has reached most of his potential and was playing on the left wing. Point to Strachan.
- Midfield:
Sutton, Hartson, Larsson... 100 of Magics and Millers won't shoot as many goals as that trio. I'm trying to say, with a striker like Larsson, we could really win an european cup (uefa cup) or be a wee suprise in the champs league. if we want to be successfull in europe, we need somebody like larsson. No doubt about that, point to MoN
- Strikers:
Result: Mon 2 Strachan 3
To cut a long story short: Imagine a young Larsson on our current team right now... argh, I should stop dreaming, but I already know what to wish for next xmas.. shame it's still many months away.

Yeh if it wasn't for Larsson I'd say this team would be much better! But Larsson gives O'Neill's team an edge! Imagine this team though...
Boruc
Wilson Mjalby McManus Naylor
Nakamura Lambert Petrov Maloney
Hesselink Larsson
That would be my ideal team between the two eras -

Mon team would wipe the floor with Strachans simply cos at there best Mons was better going forward and better defensively.Mons team hold the record for most points, least goals conceded, most clean sheets, biggest goal difirrence. We don't have a Mjallby anymore we miss that rock in the middle of Defense

Strachan wins it hands down, because most of the great players mentioned (Mjallby, Lambert, Petrov, Lubo, Henke) were not signed by MO'N.
He inherited some fantastic players, who he then organised and motivated.
WGS had to start almost from scratch.

Its a tough one cos individually strachans team are better but as a whole team unit MoN would. I would say Strachans done a better job though cos hes basically had to build a team from scratch on a shoestring, whereas MoN inherited some top players and had the luxury of spending £6m on players.
My best line up from both teams would be.
Boruc
Jackie Mjalby McManus Naylor
Naka Lambert Petrov Lubo

i still think o'neill's team is far ahead of strachan's.
watching celtic lately has become very hard to watch.
i hate to say it but we're one of the most boring sides i've watched this season. -

GS's most typical lineup
Code:Boruc 9 Telfer 7 Caldwell 7 McManus 8 Naylor 9 Nakamura 9 Gravesen 8 Lennon 7 McGeady 9 Zurawski 7 Miller 7
MON's UEFA CUp Final XI
Code:Douglas 7 Valgaeren 7 Balde 7 Mjallby 8 Agathe 8 Thompson 8 Lennon 8 Lambert 8 Petrov 8 Sutton 9 Larsson 10
Its MON's all conquering UEFA Cup Final Line-up versus WGS's most used players and regular starters. Big names missing from both line-ups but I think you'll agree that this is probably the fairest comparison for several good reasons.
I rated each player and then did the totals, MON's team still trumps Strachans. Larsson is the difference. -
Boruc
Wilson McManus Mjallby Naylor
Naka Petrov Lambert Lubo
Larsson Bellamy -

Although I would question giving Naylor and McGeady 9 points. Have they already done enough to merit more points than Petrov, Thomson, Lambert, Lennon and Mjallby ? Not for me.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 3, 2007 -
I jst thought there imagine how many goals we would conced if we had du wei and virgo in the defence.

McGeady has been a match winner in most of his games, like Nakamura and Boruc. Naylor gets 9 because he has been solid, maybe not a match winner like the 3 bhoys but he works the left side so well, the english media reckon he's due a call up soon.
They have achieved something MON could never do, even with Larsson, last 16 of the UCL so yes they do merit the comparison as they have danced their way to 2 league titles (yes, this years is firmly ours to loose now).
I didnt handicap my ratings of the players based on total achievements for Celtic. -

I'd go along with the line-ups you've got there, and the ratings are fair.
It's worth pointing out again though, that the player who made the difference was not a MO'N signing, and 10 out of 11 from WGS' team are his players, and put together for a lot less money.
