CELTIC are considering a swoop for USA World Cup star Mikkel Diskerud.
New Parkhead manager Ronny Deila is a huge fan of 23-year-old attacking midfielder Diskerud.
He failed in a bid to lure him to old club Stromsgodset two seasons ago.
And SunSport can reveal that the Rosenborg Trondheim ace — nicknamed Mix — was also on Celtic’s radar under Neil Lennon.
Now they could even get their man for as little as £250,000 as Diskerud’s contract with the Norwegians is up in December. However, Celtic will face stiff competition from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, who are monitoring Diskerud at the World Cup in Brazil.
Diskerud qualifies for the US through his mother and was given Landon Donovan’s No 10 shirt by boss Jurgen Klinsmann.
He pledged his future to them after playing for Norway at youth level and has 20 caps.
His father Paal, also his agent, he said last night: “I don’t want to comment on speculation regarding other clubs. I also don’t want to say whether he’s been offered a new deal by Rosenborg.
“But I will confirm Ronny tried to sign Mikkel when he was on loan to Belgian club Gent from Stabaek.
“I know Ronny and there were discussions between us about him going to Stromsgodset at that time.
“However, Rosenborg was better for him economically.”
Diskerud came close to moving to Portland Timbers in the MLS shortly after joining Rosenborg.
Celtic were already aware of him having scouted the 6ft youngster when he emerged as a 17-year-old with Stabaek in 2008.
He has developed a reputation in Norway as a player who thrives on the big occasion, and he scored in the Norwegian Cup Final last year.
Deila’s knowledge of his consistency could see Diskerud figure high on his list of early targets at Celtic.
And he fits into Celts’ strategy of signing young talents with high resale values.
Maybe easy for the Sun to link him but would certainly fit our signing policy and at the end of the day if our scouts had him on their list and then Ronnys mentioned him to them then you presume we would take him especially for that price. Could be a bargain gem.

No harm in signing him, although we do have plenty of midfielders. It sounds like this guy plays in Commons position and he will really stuggle to shift him from the team while Commons is on the form of his life.
Watching a video of him... he seems like a good player and one that would fit in here.
Can really hit a volly.

I've seen him play a handful of times for the U.S. team and I've always been impressed with his play. He's not quite an everyday starter yet for them, but he's decent and for the price to 250,000 I think that is quite a steal for him.

Sounds like a decent player. If Ronny went in for him before then this wouldn't surprise me.

He's good on FIFA.

I'd be happy with this, for 250k it would be a steal. I think a few of our midfielders will be out the door anyway, Kayal being one.

Bit of a stretch to bill him as a 'USA World Cup star'- he hasn't got on the field yet.

@BrendanHusebo: Yup. Keeps the ball, carries it well, gets into the box and can offer the fitness Deila requires. Poor man's Marco van Ginkel.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. Please let this happen. I've been pushing for this since he was at Stabæk pre-financial explosion.

Looks pretty good and at the price mentioned cant really see what we'd have to lose by signing him.

Basically my thoughts on him as well, granted that is all I have seen but I could plainly see that role didn't suit him and for the money he'd cost you'd be looking for him to do that as you say. -
