CELTIC are lining up a swoop for £1.5million-rated Hamilton Accies starlet James McArthur.

The champions are huge admirers of the 21-year-old midfielder and have already contacted Accies.

New Douglas Park boss Billy Reid is desperate not to lose any of his highly-rated stars.

But SunSport understands the Hoops are keen to land McArthur in this transfer window.
Bhoys manager Gordon Strachan will have to cough up £1.5m to land the Scotland Under-21 kid.
Accies boss Reid will still fight off any attempt to pinch his all-action starlet before the summer.

With just six days left until the January window shuts, Celtic would have to move fast to land a player who still has more than two years remaining on his contract.

McArthur has shone in the top flight this season, particularly in the last month.

His performances have coincided with Hamilton winning four of their last five league games to pull nine points clear of the relegation zone.

That has sparked Celts’ interest in a player they reckon would be a sound investment.

But the news is certain to alarm Rangers gaffer Walter Smith.

He has never hidden his admiration for the midfielder and has had him watched on several occasions.

However, a big-money bid would be out of the question right now for cash-strapped Gers.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s move for Hoops skipper Stephen McManus has hit a major financial hitch. Toon boss Joe Kinnear wants McManus plus cash for Spanish left-back Jose Enrique.

Celtic have inquired about a possible loan deal which would take the ex-Villarreal defender to Parkhead on loan.

However the Hoops value captain McManus higher than Enrique — and the Spaniard’s huge £40,000-a-week wages also present a significant stumbling block.

Another Celtic target, Szabolcs Huszti, could sign for Hamburg by the end of next week.

SunSport understands Hamburg chief Martin Jol is set to test Hannover’s resolve by slapping in an offer for the Hungarian wideman.

Former Tottenham boss Jol has money to spend after flogging Nigel de Jong to Manchester City for £19m.

Hamburg ace Ivica Olic has also agreed to join Bayern Munich at the start of next season, but could leave before the end of the month for a fee.

That would leave Jol short of a winger and it’s believed he has already spoken with Huszti’s representative about a move this week.

Personally i would take him before Mccarthy as i think he is better but i don't think he has chance of getting game as we have brown and crosas ready 2 from a formidable partnership and both are young

Dont think we will sign him, papers just guessing, its going to get worse by end of the week.

Hope Huszti knocks them back and signs on a bosman. very good player.

Be better for him if he stays at Hamilton, he looks ok but he's a rough diamond and one we don't have time to polish in the first team whilst chasing 4 in a row.

I would prefer McCarfey (spelling) from Hamilton if we could far better than McArthur and has far more potential imo. Dont really rate McArthur and hope it is just paper talk

He's a Rangers fan so doubt he'd come, just like I wouldn't sign for Rangers.

Unless this is another classic case of people getting him mixed up with McCarthy?

    McArthur

    McCarthy

None of them are better than what we've already got. Waste of money if we sign any of them.

I have heard that Brown and Caldwell are both huns but it doesnt stop them being 2 of our best players week in week out . I dont think McArthur would to a job and improve our mid if he would do that i would want him even if he was a hun.:50:
