Pole Zurawski thrilled at being handed legend Larsson's shirt

    From Daily Rangers

THE late evening sun was still burning the lawn outside Burnham Beeches Hotel as Maciej Zurawski returned to base camp after his first full day at Celtic.

It was a fitting sight as this is a player who believes he has just stepped into the light.

He can't speak a lot of English yet and is shadowed everywhere around the Parkhead club's HQ by his interpreter.

But the Pole believes his feet will do the talking for him as he launches himself into the greatest adventure of his career.

Zurawski has been handed the No.7 shirt, which Henrik Larsson made his own, and the thought fills this £2.2million capture with exhilaration.

For some, the burden of wearing the great man's shirt might be too much to bear but Zurawski appears to be fuelled with a belief that he is about to write a few glorious chapters of his own in Glasgow's East End.

As he slumped into a seat in the shade at teatime last night after returning from another energy-sapping training stint in Buckinghamshire, he said: 'I'm so pleased to be here.

'It's such a big change after coming from a club like Wisla Krakow.

Reception 'I can see already that I have joined a huge club and a very professional outfit.

'My team-mates have all given me a good reception and I just can't wait to get on with the job. Obviously I am honoured to be given the No.7 shirt. I'm well aware there is a history with that number and that Larsson wore the same shirt.

'With this shirt comes a level of responsibility and I have to live up to it. That does not frighten me.

'But at the same time my name is not Larsson, it is Zurawski and I must play the Zurawski way.'

That will do just fine for boss Gordon Strachan, who believes he has unearthed a gem in the 28-year-old Pole.

However, the manager is also well aware of the dangers of comparing the new man with the Swede who was labelled a * in Paradise.

Strachan said: 'If people are saying that he's the new Larsson then I think they're getting awee bit ridiculous there.

'It wouldn't be fair to burden the boy with comparisons like that.

'But my first impressions of him have been very good.He will give the team something different as he can do something that the other strikers we have can't.

'He'll drop a little bit deeper and can play between the midfield and the strikers but still manage to score goals.

'I feel we need a player like that because we'll have to play against teams who adopt a reasonably defensive approach. I know that from watching some tapes from last year.

'Most teams will come to Parkhead and try to make life difficult for us but players like Zurawski will give them something to think about as well.' It has taken Strachan some time to get his man. The securing of Zurawski was a complex business but he's here at last and beginning the hard work along with the rest of a somewhat depleted squad.

There is a real sense of belief that Zurawski can make the kind of impact on Celtic's fans that another talented Pole managed in the 1980s when Jackie Dziekanowski became the darling of the Jungle.

Zurawski said: 'I know that he did a great job here and that he became very popular with the supporters. I must try to do the same. My first target is to score goals and then hopefully the popularity will follow. I have great ambitions.

My first is to play in the Champions League and then to go on to win the championship this season with Celtic.

'I have won the title four times in Poland so I am accustomed to that now and want to keep it going in Scotland.

'While I'm at it I'd like to win all the cups as well!

'I know it's early days for me and I've only just started training but I have a good record of scoring goals and I believe I'm perfectly capable of achieving that with Celtic but it may take me a little time to settle in.

'I realise that the expectations will be high and I'm not going to make silly promises.

'All I will say is that I promise to give everything to be a success.'

Zurawski will be joined here tomorrow by fellow Polish international Artur Boruc, who will complete a one-year loan deal from Legia Warsaw to become Strachan's first-choice keeper for the new campaign.

And Zurawski believes that the capture of his countryman could prove to be another smart piece of business.

He said: 'Artur is No.2 to Jerzy Dudek in the national team and is his main rival.

Beneficial 'He's a very good goalkeeper and I'm sure his signing will be beneficial to the team and also to me personally as we can help each other to adjust to our new lives.

'I know him very well. He's a very young guy but for a keeper of such an age he has a great record.'

Zurawski, though, grinned as he added: 'I've scored two goals against him in my last two league games so I think I've been coming out on top.

'We might be good friends but there was never any friendship when we were on opposite sides of the pitch.

'But there is no doubt that he is a good goalkeeper and I'm looking forward to meeting up with him again

Rayanair just announced flights to Cracow, so expect some Wisla fans in the stands from time to time :). They probably opened the route so that Zuraw can visit us from time to time too :).

It seems like Zurawski has a good mood. That's good. We are sad to see him go, but he did so much for us, that it is good to see him finally happy with his move.

    Re: Zurawski's goals :)

impressive :) I am sure most of us from Poland will stay here for a long time. We are able to watch all the Celtic games of the scottish liga this season. I started to take to Celtic. Let's have a hope Celtic won't face Wisla Krakow in champions league qualifications..

Nice video. I particularily liked the goal against the dark green team. Does that remind anyone of a goal scored by a certain somone against a certain team this year? :p
