IT was a night of disappointment for the Celtic Colts as they exited the IRN-BRU Cup following a 3-1 first round defeat away to League Two side, Annan Athletic.

The young Hoops side were forced to play most of the game at Galabank Stadium with 10 men following Wallace Duffy’s dismissal after just eight minutes, and though Celtic battled back into the game after going 2-0 down when Regan Hendry scored, the home side extended their lead late in the game to book their place in the next round of the competition.

The meeting was a repeat of last season’s clash in the same competition. The Celtic Colts won that contest 5-1 but there was to be no similar result this time around. The first contentious moment of the game came following a tussle with Annan forward James Creaney. The young Celt was adjudged to have kicked out at his opponent and received a red card.

And on 16 minutes, the home side took the lead against the 10 men. Aidan Smith and Rabin Omar combined well following a poor clearance from the Celtic defence, with Smith firing home for the opener.

Things got worse for the Hoops six minutes later when Robbie Deas’ challenge on Smith just inside the box was penalised, and the Annan player converted the spot-kick for his second goal of the night.

Celtic, to their credit, continued to work hard and PJ Crossan had an effort saved by Alex Mitchell in the Annan goal. But there was nothing Mitchell could do five minutes later when Regan Hendry fired in a superb free-kick to reduce the deficit.

And just before the break, Mark Hill came close to grabbing an equaliser, but his shot went narrowly wide.

The second-half saw the 10 men continue to take the game to their League Two opponents, though they still had to thank Ross Doohan for denying the home side a third goal with several good saves.

Aitchison had a couple of chances, but as the young Hoops tired in the closing stages of the game, Smith completed his hat-trick on 84 minutes to put paid to any chance of a Celtic comeback.

CELTIC COLTS: Doohan, Duffy, Deas (Watson 68), Welsh, McCart(c), Hill, McInroy (Henderson 68), Nesbitt, Hendry, Crossan, Aitchison.
Subs: Mullen, Bell, Johnston, Savoury, Diver.

CELTIC can confirm that young goalkeeper Ross Doohan has joined Greenock Morton on a development loan for the first half of the season.

The 19-year-old has featured regularly for the second-string over the past 18 months, seeing involvement in competitions such as the Irn Bru Cup, the UEFA Youth League and the Premier League International Cup.

And he will head to the Championship side until January 4, with the aim of garnering further first-team experience as he looks make the grade in Paradise.

He becomes the third young Celt to depart on a temporary deal in the past week, with midfielder Joe Thomson joining fellow Championship side Livingston until the start of 2018.

Teenager Kieran Patrick Campbell, who starred for the double-winning Celtic U17s last season, has also signed for Lowland League champions East Kilbride on a development loan until January.

Everyone at Celtic wishes the Bhoys all the best during their time out on loan.
