    Great score.

Love seeing Aitchison scoring so often. Have high hopes for him.

A DELIGHTED Tommy McIntyre hailed his players after they produced an outstanding team performance to brush aside Aston Villa 3-0 in Birmingham in their opening match of the Premier League International Cup.

Luke Donnelly’s brilliant brace bookended Jack Aitchison’s emphatic finish to earn Celtic maximum reward at Villa Park and give them a dream start in the group.

Goalkeeper Logan Bailly also made a vital contribution, saving a penalty from former England striker Gabby Agbonlahor with the score at 2-0 to keep the Bhoys in the driving seat.

The Belgian shot-stopper was included from the start alongside fellow senior players Dedryck Boyata and Gary Mackay-Steven as they garnered some much-needed game-time.

Loan Bhoys Donnelly, Jamie Lindsay and Joe Thomson also featured, with the remainder of the team comprising of the Development Squad.

And McIntyre was thrilled at the efforts of all of those who took the field as the Hoops mixed style with substance to the delight of the sizable Celtic support in attendance.

“It was a really impressive performance,” he told the official website. “It was a really good team performance. We had a good blend of experience and youth players and they seemed to compliment really well on the pitch.

“We played some lovely football and played at a good tempo. We knocked the ball about and controlled the game and created a lot of chances, which was pleasing as well.

“There was also a terrific save from Logan from the penalty at 2-0 at a key moment. We got the third goal after that and that effectively killed the game. It was really pleasing, as was the way we managed the game between then and the end.

“All credit to the first-team lads that came in - Logan, Dedryck and Gary – as their attitude was first class and we had also had one or two players who had been out on loan and you could see the wee difference they made. Then there were the ones who have been playing the domestic games as well as the European games.

“We managed to get two days in preparation for the game and things worked really well tonight. We started the game really well and controlled it, which was something we had said to them.

“We moved the ball and we had periods where we rested in possession, and I felt we were lethal, particularly in the final third.

“It was a really creative attacking performance. There was a good batch of fans and they were excellent and the players really responded to that.

“There was a lovely pitch at Villa Park inside a nice stadium and the first-team lads enjoyed it as well. They needed a wee bit of game-time. All in all, it was a good night’s work.”

Having dispatched the Midlands club, Celtic will now travel to Norwich next week for their second group game full of confidence, though McIntyre knows that it will be another testing tie, whatever team the Canaries put out.

“Norwich will be a top team and they are top of their league at U23 level” said the coach. “Aston Villa had a four first-team players tonight and I am sure Norwich will be the same and play a selection of first-team players.

“That’s the good thing about it. It’s a mix between first-team and youth and there is no better way for our players to learn from our senior pros, particularly in the way the manager wants them to play, and that was one of the best performances tonight.”

Cheers for the report Crow. Sounds like we played a brilliant game. Villa must have a decent team too.

Hope we give Norwich a good game, that'll be a tough test.
