CELTIC’S rousing victory against Cowdenbeath in the Irn Bru Cup on Tuesday night was testament to the character of the young talent emerging at the club, according to Tommy McIntyre.
For the second match in a row the Development Squad coach had to watch his side come from a goal down to emerge victorious against higher league opposition, but they did so with a display full of guile and determination to secure their place in the next round of the competition, beating the Blue Brazil 2-1 at Central Park.
“It was a well-contested cup tie,” he told the official Celtic website in an exclusive interview. “We knew exactly the way Cowdenbeath would play as we had watched them a few times and it was their home ground but I thought we stuck to the task.
“I was a bit disappointed that we were a goal down in the first-half as I thought we created the better chances throughout the game, but there was always going to be that aerial threat from them because they had a couple of big lads up front and their set-plays were difficult for us.
“I don’t think we did enough to stop the supply coming into the box but nonetheless, I thought it was a great reaction from the boys in the second-half.”
A goal from on-loan Hearts striker Nikolay Todorov had put Cowdenbeath in front on the half-hour mark, with the striker curling a low shot past Ross Doohan in the Celtic goal from just over six yards.
The young Celts remained calm at the interval, however, and emerged for the second-half with a new-look formation, with recent signing PJ Crossan joining Jack Aitchison up front. The switch provided dividends almost instantly, with Aitchison grabbing the equaliser on 51 minutes before substitute Crossan fired in the eventual winner 20 minutes later.
Cowdenbeath then lost their composure as Christopher Turner saw red for gesturing to the away fans as he was substituted shortly after Crossan’s goal, before the home team were issued with a string of bookings for late tackles and cynical fouls.
The Hoops remained composed, however, and held on to their slender advantage to book their place in the third round of the competition.
“We felt as if we need a wee bit more up front so we went 4-4-2 when Aidan Nesbitt was struggling a little bit,” McIntyre explained. “He had a tummy bug so even through the first-half he worked really hard to try to shake it off but he struggled so we had to make that change anyway.
“We thought we’d have a go at it and go 4-4-2 and it’s something we’ve been thinking about for a long time with PJ and Jack Aitchison, and how they complement one another and there you go, they got a goal each.
“It shows great character from the players to come back like that. We were very calm at half-time. We said we’d created a lot of chances in the first-half, we just need to make sure we nullified any threat they had.
“We mentioned one or two things about getting the ball down to the outside, playing it across them and we got a reaction. The two goals were great and I thought we could have scored more with some better finishing, but I’m really pleased we created as many chances as we did.”
Celtic will now go into the third round draw with McIntyre hoping his side can continue their positive run in the competition, which is bringing valuable experience to his young team.
“We play in European games and in the Development League and it’s a different type of game but that’s what they’re going to face if they want to play this type of game in a man’s league,” he said.
“They’ve got to understand that it’s not going to be easy. Teams playing against Celtic want to do well and there’s a physical side to the game, but we’ve got no complaints. We thought the players stuck to the task really well and all credit to them.”

Missed the 2nd half but a great comeback for the lads, heard they got lumps kicked out of them in the 2nd half as well. That PJ Crossan looks a great pick up as well, for a 17 year old he's well built already plus plenty pace and knows where the net is. Ajer looked a lot better this game as well from what I saw.

That'll be a good test for the young boys. Livingston have won their first 2 games in League One, and seemingly the play decent football.

@TmcintyreTommy on drawing @LiviFCOfficial : "Naturally, would have preferred a home tie but it's a good pitch & stadium.

TM: "Didn't matter who we got, was going to be a tough & Livingston will be a tough game but exciting & a good test for young players.

TM: "Been two tough games, two different games & have no doubt the @LiviFCOfficial tie will be the same but we will be prepared.

Just up the road from me, might go along.

I reckon' we have every chance. Livi have been poor the past few year, although I'm not sure what their team is like now. Burchill was with them for a bit as manager.

TOMMY McIntyre insists Celtic’s Development Squad will relish the challenge of going head-to-head against Livingston in the Irn Bru Challenge Cup third round.
The young Hoops were drawn away to the David Hopkin’s side at today’s draw, which was held underneath The Kelpies.
After impressive victories over League Two outfits Annan Athletic and Cowdeneath, the U20s are the only Colt team left in the competition.
And while taking on Livingston, who have won their first two matches of the season in League One, will be another demanding assignment, the Bhoys certainly won’t be fazed by the test, according to Celtic’s Professional Academy Manager.
McIntyre said: “Naturally, we would have preferred a home tie but it’s a good pitch and a good stadium, and we have played there before in terms of the European games as well.
“It didn’t matter who we got, it was always going to be a tough tie and Livingston will be a tough game for us. But it’s exciting and it will be a good test for the young players and we are looking forward to it.
“It’s a feather in our cap that we are the only 20s team to get through to this stage of the competition and again it does highlight there is a need for a Colt team to play in the league.
“We have been really pleased with the performances so far. There are one or two things we can work on from the Cowdenbeath game but in cup competitions the results are ultimately what counts.
“We have said to them that performance-wise we look on that as being the main thing as by performing well they will naturally win more games than they lose.
“We have had two tough games, two different games, and I have no doubt that the Livingston tie will be a different one as well, but I’m sure they will be prepared for it as will we.”
The youths earned the right to play Livingston by battling back to prevail 2-1 against Cowdenbeath on Tuesday night, with second-half goals from Jack Aitchison and PJ Crossan completing the turnaround after Nikolay Todorov had opened the scoring for the Fifers.
And McIntyre says the young Celts are enjoying being part of the tournament and testing themselves against senior opponents.
He said: “They seem to be enjoying it. We knew it was going to be a tough game against Cowdenbeath. We were playing away from home on a tight pitch and we had to alter our game a wee bit to deal with the aerial threat and the physicality.
“We told the players about that but at the same time we still wanted to play football in the right manner, and so long as they keep showing that commitment then we won’t be too far away.
“It’s part of their education,” continued the coach. “We see it as developmental, though we obviously want to do well too. Livingston will have our full respect, but we will want to do well and win the tie. It’s a good step up and it’s an exciting game for us.”
McIntyre was also keen to highlight the professionalism and commitment of first-team squad member Kristoffer Ajer, who has played in the opening two rounds of the cup.
He said: “Kristoffer Ajer coming down and playing, his attitude was first class, as was that of the boys who are out on loan. It’s another stage forward onto the next level and we are delighted to be in the competition.
“We just don’t want to be too complacent. We want to focus on what we need to do to get to the next stage and we will make sure we do our preparation.”
And he reckons there is a real optimism in general around the Celtic Youth Academy at the moment, with so many young players in and around the top team.
The coach added: “Absolutely, it’s vibrating around the club. That only comes from hard work and staying focused with 100 per cent commitment and effort from the staff and players.
“We had four Academy players finishing the Champions League game on Wednesday night and that augers well for the future."

Celtic open up their defence of the development league with a 4-3 win against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, Kristoffer Ajer opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes only for Killie to equalise immediately, Regan Hendry put Celtic back in front on half time but two goals in the first 15 minutes had Kilmarnock on top for the first time in the game 3-2, Hendry then knocked in his second before PJ Crossan got the winner with 20 minutes to go.

CELTIC’S Development Squad kicked off the defence of their league title with an impressive 4-3 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
First-half goals from Kristoffer Ajer and Regan Hendry gave the Hoops a 2-1 lead at the break. Hendry netted his second of the net in the second-half to make it 3-3 after the home side had scored two goals to take the lead and then, with 20 minutes of the match remaining, PJ Crossan scored what proved to be the winner.
Tommy McIntyre’s side took all of five minutes to open the scoring. Calvin Miller took advantage of a short corner to clip the ball to the far side of the box and Ajer was there to fire the ball home.
That lead lasted just 60 seconds before Flo Bojaj dispossessed Regan Hendry and fired the ball high into the net for the equaliser.
Celtic responded well and had a number of chances, through Efe Ambrose, Theo Archibald and then a Miller volley on 26 minutes which was well-held by the Killie keeper.
There was a moment of concern for the Hoops on the half-hour mark when captain Aidan McIlduff crashed into the post while making a clearance, but thankfully he was able to continue after some treatment.
And just before half-time, Tommy McIntyre’s side restored their lead. Tenacious play down the left flank from Miller saw the winger fire the ball low to the back post where Hendry was on hand to convert, giving the Hoops a 2-1 half-time lead.
The home side stormed into the attack after the break, however, and they equalised for the second time in the match on 52 minutes when Lewis Morrison intercepted a Dedryck Boyata pass to score. And on the hour mark, Bojaj scored his second of the night to put Killie 3-2 ahead.
Four minutes later, it was Celtic who equalised. A wonderful 40-yard pass from Mark Hill inside his own half found Archibald, and he fed the ball to Hendry, who smashed it home from 12 yards out, giving the Killie keeper no chance.
Tommy McIntyre’s side drove forward in search of a winner, which duly arrived on 70 minutes, and once again it was Archibald who was involved in the move. He played it across the box, and it was fired towards goal by Anthony Ralston, with PJ Crossan on hand to finish and make it 4-3 to the Hoops.
Regan Hendry had a chance for his hat-trick with just five minutes of the match remaining, but he fired narrowly wide after he’d been set up by Ambrose.
But the Hoops saw out the match to triumph in a seven-goal thriller and get their title defence off to a winning start.
