SECOND-HALF goals from Jack Aitchison and PJ Crossan secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Celtic’s Under-20 side over Cowdenbeath tonight (Tuesday) to send the young Hoops through to the third round of the Irn Bru Cup.
Tommy McIntyre kept the same starting XI that defeated Annan Athletic 5-1 in the first round at Cappielow two weeks ago, and the Hoops enjoyed a strong start, opening the game at a blistering pace, and Joe Thomson was denied early by David McGurn in the Cowdenbeath goal.
It was the hosts, however, who created the next chance of the match. Kris Renton’s header from the corner fell just wide of the post in the 8th minute.
Aidan Nesbitt enjoyed some early success down the right wing against Shaun Rutherford, but his crosses couldn’t find a team-mate in the box. The winger was then found by Regan Hendry in the 22nd minute but his shot on the volley couldn't hit the target.
Cowdenbeath started to find their own rhythm, with Nickolay Todorov testing the Hoops defence, but his effort was held well by goalkeeper Ross Doohan. However, the hosts took the lead on 30 minutes when Todorov turned his man in the box and snuck the ball through the legs of Doohan.
The Bhoys replied promptly as McGurn gathered a Calvin Miler cross after the attacker had spun quickly down the wing. There were no further attempts as half-time approached and the scoreline remained 1-0 to Cowdenbeath.
Celtic began the second-half in strong fashion and kept Cowdenbeath pinned back from the restart. Playing some crisp, passing football, the SPFL Development League champions quickly carved out the first chance of the half and it was excellently taken by Jack Aitchsion.
Celtic’s young striker controlled the ball perfectly in the 51st minute, his deadly first touch from the long ball was followed by a clinical finish at an acute angle for the equaliser.
And in the 70th minute, the young Hoops deservedly took the lead. The tireless Joe Thomson thumped his shot off the crossbar and the rebounded effort couldn't be held by McGurn which allowed substitute PJ Crossan to fire home Celtic's second.
The hosts were then reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute as Christopher Turner was sent off whilst being substituted.
A sweeping move from Celtic five minutes later saw PJ Crossan run through the middle and his sweet strike forced McGurn into a low save. Thomson was next to attack. The midfielder skipped away from one challenge on a purposeful run down the right but his effort was cleared to safety in the 83rd minute.
The young Celts defended well to see out the final stages of the match to the delight of an impressive visiting support.
A delighted Tommy McIntyre can now look forward to the next round of the competition where his young side can potentially meet Championship opposition.

The only U20 team to make it through from tonight's games.

5 out of the 6 U20's were knocked out.
