    match report from today's game

A LATE rally from Celtic’s Development Squad was not enough to secure them another victory on the road as Tommy McIntyre’s men were held to a 2-2 draw against Dundee today (Friday) at Links Park, Montrose.
Mark Hill’s lobbed finish gave the Hoops a well-earned early lead but the visitors drew level on the 26th minute after capitalising on a break of the ball in the box.
Celtic regained the lead just over 20 minutes into the second-half, however, through a deflected strike from Regan Hendry inside the area after good work on the left by Calvin Miller. Dundee showed good fight and it was substitute Josh Skelly who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to end the game all-square.
Tommy McIntyre made five changes from the team that defeated Kilmarnock in the league last week, with Ross Doohan, Josh Kerr, Blair Kidd, Dan Higgins and Theo Archibald coming into the starting line-up at the expense of Conor Hazard, Fiacre Kelleher, Aidan McIlduff and first-team players, Scott Allan and Ryan Christie.
It was the Celts who started the match on the front foot, with Archibald causing the Dundee defence plenty of problems, and he had his side’s first effort on the fourth minute but his dipping volley fell just short of the post.
Confidence was high from that moment on and the champions proceeded to play with a high-tempo, quick-passing style which proved difficult for the hosts to handle as chances began to mount.
The Hoops crafted another opportunity in the eighth minute. Calvin Miller’s strike scrambled away by Kyle Gourlay in the Dundee goal.
The visitors continued to dominate possession in the opening period and nearly doubled their lead in the 25th minute, Miller once again threatening, but his shot this time dragged wide.
However, against the run of play, Dundee drew level. A slack pass at the back was pounced on by substitute John Black who tucked the ball through the legs of Doohan to bring his side back into the game.
Despite being in the ascendancy for most of the half, Celtic had to settle for a 1-1 draw at the interval.
Dundee came out the blocks for the restart much quicker than they had in the first-half and carved out a chance with a shot from Black, but the striker’s effort was stopped by Doohan. And Ross Doohan had to pull off another smart stop from a close-range strike by Craig Wighton.
The Bhoys began to get in their stride and the pressure paid off just over 20 minutes into the half as the Hendry’s strike was deflected into the back of the net.
The home side fought back, however, and substitute Josh Skelly sneaked the ball into the corner to score his side’s second equaliser of the match.
The draw still allowed McIntyre’s side to continue their magnificent league campaign which has seen them yet to lose a match, though they face another tough test on Monday, April 18 as the champions visit Falkirk.

CELTIC’S Development Squad maintained their unbeaten run in the league this season with a well-contested but ultimately deserved 1-0 win over Falkirk.
After a largely uneventful first-half both teams came out for the restart full of attacking intent and it was the Celts who broke the deadlock through a Calvin Miller penalty.
The striker was felled in the box after collecting Stuart Armstrong’s pin-point pass and he put just enough power and accuracy behind his spot-kick to beat Lewis McMinn and score what proved to be the decisive goal for the Bhoys.
Falkirk battled back and went close to equalising through powerful shots from Reis Peggie and Kevin O’Hara, but Conor Hazard stayed alert to bat away the Bairns advances, and ensure another three points on the road for Tommy McIntyre’s side.
With the title already in the bag, McIntyre took the opportunity to make wholesale changes to his side from the 2-2 draw with Dundee, and introduced seven fresh faces.
Ross Doohan, Josh Kerr, Blair Kidd, Dan Higgins, Joe Thomson, Mark Hill and Theo Archibald all dropped out while Conor Hazard, Fiacre Kelleher, Calum Waters, Conor McManus and Aidan McIlduff came back in. Stuart Armstrong and Ryan Christie completed the changes, adding some valuable experience to the ranks for the game.
Celtic started the brighter of the two sides but it was Falkirk who won the first sight of goal, with Peggie firing wide from distance. Scott Shepherd then forced a low save from Hazard in the Celts goal before the striker saw a free-kick from 20 yards deflected wide for a corner.
The Hoops responded with a fine curling shot from Regan Hendry, their best chance of the half, which brought out an equally impressive save from Lewis McMinn but Sam Wardrop’s header from the resultant corner was off target.
Armstrong and Miller then tested the Bairns keeper with stinging shots but the game stayed goalless as it passed the half hour mark. That remained the case as the referee blew for half-time, with McIntyre’s side dominant in possession but unable to find the breakthrough in a feisty but well-contested first-half.
Celtic had a big penalty shout denied as the second-half started as Miller’s low cut-back appeared to be blocked with a hand before Wardrop saw a header cleared off the line, with another claim for handball waved away.
The full-back then rippled the side-netting with a wayward shot before Armstrong smacked a Falkirk wall with a free-kick after Kyle Johnson was cautioned for a tug on Miller in a frantic start to the second-half.
The breakthrough finally came minutes later when Armstrong supplied a well-weighted pass to Miller in the box and the striker was clipped as he went to pull the trigger. A penalty was awarded and the forward dusted himself off and slotted the spot-kick past McMinn, who did well to get a hand to the low shot but couldn’t do enough to stop it from creeping across the line.
Falkirk responded by playing long over the top of the Celtic defence, allowing their full-backs to bomb forward in support. O’Hara and Peggie tested Hazard’s reflexes from distance but the Hoops goalie was alert to the danger, while the fresh legs of Theo Archibald on the flanks gave the Hoops respite going forward.
The game became stretched as it approached full-time but neither side could supply the finishing touch to add further goals and the Celts claimed a narrow but well-earned win against an impressive Falkirk side.

GOALS were at a premium in last night’s Development League clash between Celtic and Falkirk but young Hoops coach Tommy McIntyre was pleased with his team’s performance in their 1-0 win over the Bairns.
The title-winning young Celts travelled to the Falkirk Stadium keen to hold on to their unbeaten record in the league this season and were made to work for their victory against a well-drilled home team, who did well to keep the Bhoys out for the most part while threatening on the break.
A stunning start to the second-half from McIntyre’s side eventually saw Celtic take the lead through a Calvin Miller penalty and go on to control the game, and the performance won the praise of the Academy coach.
“Falkirk is a good place to pay at,” he said after the match. “The pitch is excellent and suits the way we want to play.
“I thought we played really well. There weren't many goals in it, although we created one or two good chances, but I thought we controlled the game throughout.
“It was a good bit of skill from Calvin and I thought it could have been more than one but, to be fair, praise to Falkirk. They stuck in, they were dogged and they got everybody behind the ball.
“At the same time I thought we controlled it.”
With the league title already in the bag McIntyre took the opportunity to make a total of seven changes to his side following their recent 2-2 draw with Dundee.
However, he said the Bhoys still have a lot to play for, and he praised first-team stars Stuart Armstrong and Ryan Christie for their attitude after being included in the starting XI.
“I think there’s a lot to play for,” he said. “The players have always got to try to improve on their individual performances, the back four have only lost 13 goals in 28 games so they have a milestone they want to preserve and it’s the same with the strikers with goals.
“The biggest thing is progressing to the next level and they have to show they can do that in front of the first-team staff.
“They really worked hard and the attitude of the first-team lads in Stuart Armstrong and Ryan Christie was exceptional. Calvin Miller, from the front, has been fantastic in training and he continues to do that in the games.
“The work ethic from the players as a team was tremendous and that’s something we always look for so I’m really pleased.”
