Why would I have a hangover?

The board and the board only are to blame.

I argued with half the posters on TC about this. Ppl held this belief that we were getting money, actual money to spend on Jotas "replacement".

    I argued the contrary

We're still paying the same prices for players we did 20 * years ago. We don't even account for inflation ffs.

This is exactly why we can no longer expect results in Europe. Simple as that.

Not Yang's fault. Not Rodgers' fault.

Tbf mate the biggest contributor to our cl performance s is geography, we live in a country of 5M people , we’re we play in a small league and play teams from far bigger superior richer leagues who have probably 5 to 10 times our budget for players , saying we should be competing in the champions league is a bit like saying hearts, Motherwell Aberdeen Hibs and the likes should be competing for the spl, far near impossible when you’re playing against a better standard of player in nearly every position

Agreed, geography plays a massive part in our disadvantage.

But if the figures are there to see. Highlighted by Simon Jordan the other day. We have a larger or similar turnover than the likes of PSV and Feynoord.

Feynoord brought in 36m in , and SPENT 36m.

PSV brought in 50m and spent 53m.

That's how you run a football club. That's LIVING WITHIN YOUR MEANS.

How much did we bring in, and how much did we spend again?
The excuse given that "we won't make the CL every year, so need to hoard tens of millions of pounds."
Are Feynoord and PSV expected to make the CL every season?

We massively dropped the ball in the market, AGAIN this term.
Feynoord spent 9m on a replacement player. PSV spent 15m on a replacement. How much did we spend?

There's no getting away from it. Our board are so risk averse that we are being left in the dust by sides we should be competing with.

He’s only 21 and you can see he’s not ready for the step up to the CL yet, not going to write him off this early.

Lack of end product is his downfall so far but that can be coached.
What he does in the first instance: touches, taking on his man etc can't be. You can definitely see the type of player Rodgers could coach Yang to be.

I like Yang but he’s clearly not ready for games like that one last night.

Clearly nowhere even near ready to be starting in games like last night, it’s no slight on him and absolutely not writing him off but it sums up our window that he was essentially replacing our £25m winger and one of the most talented players we’ve had in years, who actually performed in the champions league last season.

He didn’t ever stop trying in fairness to Yang but he was just miles off the level required.

    Strongly disagree.

Teams like Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen could and should be competing for the SPFL. They have massive potential supports that just don't bother to attend anymore because they're tired of mediocrity. If their boards adopted a more positive mentality, there's absoutely no reason they couldn't invest, attract the fans back in and find success.

Similarly, we can go further in the CL if we invest in players sufficiently. We have the money to do so, we are not limited to buying ten £1m punts every summer, players like Jota/CCV show what money can buy you if you're careful about how you spend it. They also show the profit you can make when you scout and invest wisely. We have a very profitable club, a CL shop window, and a billionaire owner, we're not limited to the extent people seem to believe.

This perfectly summarises my frustrations. If saw the board spend say £10M of the money made on Jota on one player then we would be more forgiving to the board. The reality is I think we have spent a combined £5M (thereabouts) on Palma and Yang, I think Palma looks a player but he is no Jota.

This example looks worse when you consider we spent a somewhere between 1-3M on tillio who hasn't even featured yet. That is potentially in the region of £8M spent on three wide players and we are not certain if any are going to improve us. I am confident Palma is going to be brilliant when he gets going but again, not Jota standard. Surely, surely there is a £8M winger out there that is good enough for us, wants to join us and we can afford the wage of!?

Spending that sum on three wide players shows an absolute lack of ambition. It's not on the players at all.

Our board have absolutely no idea how to move us up to the next level of our player trading model.

We used to create this bullshit notion that there was a ceiling on what we could get for players from Scotland which with Tierney, Dembele and Jota has been blown out the water.

Since he is still considered a project more so I’d rather his appearances for now be off the bench running at tired legs where he might have more joy. I think even right now Palma has merited a starting place over him

He has shown good flashes domestically but trying too hard to impress instead of keeping it simple. He needs time.

Another one I want to like and can see some potential there, but, it’s not fair on him or us as fans to be thrown in, in such an important game.

Rather Oh out wide if that’s the case. Big, physical outball.
