Totally agree. The 1st two Kings of leon albums were far better than their last two in my opinion.

Definately Maybe is one of my favourite albums of all time.

The Killers are an example. When they were new on the scene, Hot Fuss, what an album. Really really liked them. The next album was ok, but their new one is absolute gash !! They are playing next week but im not going to waste cash to go see them.

the way i see if you like a band end off ! enjoy the ride but i do agree that a lot of bands once get their heads above water tend to forget where the came from when they 1st started out.

Yip, the acid test with music is if it sounds good.

Nothing to do with how complex, musically gifted, lyrically perfect or anything else a song or songs are.

My thoughts are that it is because people love their bands, bands that they have found, bands that no-one knows about and when other bands sell out and become commercial or famous playing 40 year old money making tricks in their music is when folks frown upon them for going down the popularity path. Rightly or wrongly.

There are several bands who became more boring the more success the had imo of course.

    Quick couple of examples.....

    Coldplay
    REM

the streets are a prime example for me, 17 year old neds have ruined them for me, mike skinner is a legend, and ive ben listening to the streets for years, "dry your eyes mate" comes out, suddenly the gigs are sold out, in larger venues, and are full of twats who think they have just discovered them, "have you heard that new band the streets?" IVE BEEN LISTENING TO THEM FOR YEARS YOU *!!!

biffy are another example, the amount of legging wearing, malbrough light smoking, nme reading, over done eye linered too cool for school girls asking me in there made up accent that belongs * no where "have you heard of biffy clyro, they are like so cool, simon is like really hot" HEARD OF THEM?? THEY HAD AN ALBUM OUT 7 YEARS AGO YOU LITTLE TROLLOP, NOW GO BACK TO PRETENDING YOUR A SKINS CHARACTER AND STOP PRETENDING YOU KNOW * ABOUT MUSIC

thats what annoys me, i cant speak for anyone else

Well said. These music-by-numbers bands are absolutley fine for the disposable market they are intended for. In fact, the very fact that most "mainstream" bands made it to the mainstream in the first place, is that their music is bland enough to appeal to the mass media buying public.

I'm not what you'd call a big fan of radiohead but I canrecognise that they've had mass worldwide appeal whislt still retaining their own artistic creative ethos. And fair play to them.

However, it's a well documented fact that most critically acclaimed music rarely acheived high record sales. Joe public will always tell you that "20 million people can't be wrong" or "I know what I like" and that's fair enough.

But don't try and pretend it's of particularly high quality.

What was really telling is that I downloaded the last 40 years of number 1's and I'm failry sure most people would agree, even people you woould consider "mianstream", that it was a sodden lump of almost 100% horrendously turgid *.

Apart from the Mr Blobby one of course. That was bangin':shamrock:

i dont get this either but i think nme has a lot to do with it, all they seem to care about is the next best thing and naming the next best thing before anyone else, i got a mate whos a bit of an nme freak who in my eyes is a stereotypical nme reader, our conversations go something like this:
monkjack: alright phil mate you heard this band glasvegas they quite good
Phil: I heard about them * months ago mate not really feeling them anymore they on radio 1 all the time

Its sad as * to be honest but then for me music aint so much about the 'scenes' which go with it music to me is just that MUSIC you either like it or dont like it

You'll always get people who deliberately don't listen to stuff in the charts cos they're just music snobs but in a lot of cases its because the people who liked them at the start see a change in their sound and don't like it.
Green Day who are my 2nd favourite band have "sold out" twice first when they released Dookie in 1994 and then in 2004 with American Idiot. It wasn't right to see them on Smash Hits covers, I got a leak of the album and loved it for about two months solid, listening to nothing else. Then they released "big" singles like Wake Me Up When September Ends and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and everyone loved them and they became overexposed. I grew out of them, but then soon when the hype died down I went back to them and the album American Idiot is easily one of my favourite albums, not one bad song there.

Same with Kings Of Leon, I like Use Somebody IN MY OWN TIME but not when it comes on the radio or the music channels. It's probably my most annoying song, but I still love it.
Their weakest album is the one thats got them worldwide success, its just not rockin enough compared to the other three, and I have to disagree with an earlier poster, Because of the Times is a crackin album, sort of between the first two and the latest effort, but theres still loads of old-skool KOL tunes on it like Charmer and Black Thumbnail.
