when we first signed hinkel we were supposed to be getting a pacey defender who can cross a ball and german international....he looks slow and some of his positional sense is awful, and the german coach would rather put a midfielder at right back than pick hinkel..says all you need to know.hopefully he will go to sum rubbish epl team in the summer.:shamrock:

Which is why I think Naylor is misunderstood. Naylor is a really decent defender, really good at tucking in to save our CBs, can read the game well. His attacking has varied from looking top class occasionally to pretty limited at other times to dire in patches (but not that often). However a guy who is an excellent defender and an overall passible attacker is about the best we can really hope for at FB. Naylor really is a lot closer to the best we can hope for than fans care to admit.

    Stuttgart fan here - :bbpd:

The fact that Andy hasn't been called up to the national team has nothing to do with his performances on the pitch and everything with the fact that Löw has and only plays his favourites and turns two blind eyes to everyone else. Best recent examples would be Stefan Kiessling and Kevin Kuranyi. Also, as Hinkel has said a couple of times himself, he, unlike e.g. the Bayern players, does not have a lobby speaking for him (though I certainly would have loved to see WGS having a go at Löw). Basically, for Löw and most of the German media and public, the only German players abroad worth mentioning are Michael Ballack and Christoph Metzelder (though with the latter it's mostly for either injury reports or articles on how he's failed to make the Real bench).

I also find it quite funny that Andy gets called out and criticised for his defending - when he was still playing for us, it was rather the other way 'round and people, especially towards the end of his stay, were moaning about his lack of confidence and attacking spirit.

From what I've seen of his performances for you, he is back on a pretty high level of playing (as evidenced by his assists - I also think he should get some credit for helping to set up the first goal this weekend) and that some of the difficulties he has in defense stem from the fact that e.g. the midfielder in front of him is either not tracking back enough (it's taken some of our fans a long time, but some of them are admitting now that that was part of the problem when Andy was still with us; apart from the fact that he was hampered by a persisting injury).

So, I guess, in a nutshell: Stop bashing him, you got an able and competent player who would be in contention for a slot at the WC if Löw got his head out of his * (and stopped considering one of the German fullbacks as a possible stand-in at RB: We all know that it doesn't work and that even the player himself doesn't want to play there).

i find that funny too. people dont like naylor cos hes not as good at attacking as defending and people dont like hinkel cos hes not as good at defending as he is at attacking.

It's taken me a long time to accept Andreas Hinkel but I now have. I still wish he was better defensively than he is but I really do appreciate his attacking play now. He is the best right-back we've got and has probably been our most consistent player this season.

because wilson has great natural talent but injuries have ruined him

you might as well turn back the clock six years and say he's twenty because that will be the development curve he'll be on, i say by the time hes 28/29, he'll be A) playable or B) sellable, maybe not as good as hinkel but playable in a sense that he'd make a good squad player
