It might sound strange to some but I've been told by people down here that they like the glasgow accent(not the neds, just normal)most out of Scottish ones and as I have a cockney and strong Glaswegian accent that I'm blessed :smiley-laughing002: to be able to change when I want I'd agree as I'm biased..
I think a lot especially west coast who's towns have twangs probably feel the same,I'm not sure...

It's not just glasgow that has this,I've been on holiday and had people tell me there from London when asked where say Stevenage :97:..

Strange but for some out of Towners, small places like to be part of the big cities if you know what I mean..
Strange to a lot of us but that must be the case, can't think of any other reason apart from overspill why people would want to tweak there accents than to be 'cooler'!:52:

You are way off the mark mate.
Almost every single resident of Cumbernauld in the 60's and 70's came from Glasgow-Actually was a Glaswegian and moved to Cumbernauld. It is not just an overspill, it is another Glasgow scheme!!
Denny and Banknock and Bonnybridge did not get any overspill.....except from Cumbernauld.
Cumbernauld was a newly purpose built town specifically for Glasgow people.60 years ago, there was no town there...just a village, which is why they have a Glasgow accent...........they are almost exclusively Glaswegians, or the children of Glaswegians.

You talk of logic, and yet your answer is that a town with 50000 inhabitants just want to "sound like a wegie"!!! You do understand what "logic" means dont you?If you actually use logic, the answer is right in front of you!:50:

I think it's a copied accent, I'm originally from the south-west of Scotland and there are way too many people trying to speak with a Glaswegian accent, to the point that now I live in Glasgow, the accent does my head in.

My whole family (both sides) emigrated here from Ireland. I don't speak with an Irish accent though.

They (your family)moved to a place where the accent was different....Cumbernauld people came from Glasgow, to live among other ex Glaswegians...no one else lived there except them, so the kids at school would interact with other kids with the same accent. There was no input from other sources.........they moved en masse from Glasgow, they lived en masse with other Glaswegians, and vast numbers of them continued to work in the Glasgow area.

    (similar to the Corby Scots)

How could Cumbernauld develop an accent when just about EVERY kid that has grown up here (I'm from Cumbernauld) has both parents speaking with a Glaswegan accent? We are obviously going to carry the same accent.

But the Irish moving here is comparable to Glaswegians moving to Cumbernauld. Everything you've just said is exactly the same in the Irish situation. Glaswegians moved somewhere where the accent was different (miles from Glasgow), as did the Irish (to Scotland). They lived among ex Glaswegians - the Irish lived among other Irish. The kids at Catholic schools over here would almost always have been Irish as there were no other Catholics here, which is the same as the ex Glaswegians at Cumbernauld schools. They moved en masse from Ireland and as you said yous moved en masse from Glasgow. If I walked around here talking in an Irish accent I'd be accused of copying the accent and wanting to be Irish.

Mygirlmaria is right. It's not a copy, it's a transplanted original.

Anyway one day we took our daughter to Palcerigg Country Park, they had signs for things like "Buffalos" with an arrow pointing 'this way', and "wolves" that way, "Goats" this way and then one for Abronhill. And my daughter said "Dad whats an Abronhill?" Couldnae stop laughing for ages

I know what you are saying......but, and this is opinion.......i think the Glasgow accent is what it is because of the Irish influence.I think the Glasgow accent is a mixture of what was there before, and the accent of the new immigrants.....which is why it is so different to the rest of Scotland.

I think in other parts of the country, the Irish were more dispersed.....but in the west, there were so many of them, they helped create a new accent.

Partly true. Originally Scottish Gaelic pronunciations from the Highlands and Islands have had at least as much influence on Glasgow pronunciations as anything from Ireland has.

I will provide deeper analysis when I am not so tired and emotional.

The point is though, the Glasgow accent keeps spreading further and further out. And they are not overspilling anymore!!!! Its just trendiness I.e wanting to be Glasgwegian. The same is also evident in Berwick where there was actually an article in the Berwickshire News about how their residents now sound more Geordie than Scottish. Up until recently residents of Berwick (although it is in England) sounded more Scottish than Northumbrian. But now especially the younger ones don't even sound Northumbrian, they sound Geordie. That's exactly whats happening here. When places as far as Kilmarnock etc are sounding Glaswegian and it keeps spreading. The same isn't true for Edinburgh. Cause the Edinburgh accent kinda stops at Edinburgh. Anything West of Broxburn doesn't sound like Edinburgh. But the Glasgow accent is getting ridiculous in how far its spreading. I mean, Shotts and Nemains aswell ffs

Hiphopaddict - that was too long a post (try paragraphs next time) but you're absolutely correct that major cities' accents and dialects are affecting the areas around them and making them more 'urban'. That is the same for all major cities - for examples, people 'near' Glasgow sound more Glasgow, those 'near' Edinburgh sound more Edinburgh, and so on.

It depends how we define 'near'.

Aye I once got pulled up on this forum from a Tim poster from there but Im sure I read it has the biggest Zombie club in the world outside Glasgow, but I am sure someone told me its been disbanded, how very apt!

The times I have been there, always seemed way way more huns than tims, some * called me a * * when I was filling up my car there also someone told me they even have an Orange Walk there every year and have had since the 60s, thats disturbing for anywhere but even more so central England!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never watch they gypsy programmes on tele ? They are all born in England but speak with Irish accents.

What accent should people from Cumbernauld have ?
