I'm pretty confident they can all hold their own at that level. I'm not saying they're going to be stars at CL level, but we have a good enough side to not be getting embarrassed in every single game. Hardly an outrageous statement to make.

Well we have only been embarrassed in one game, and it was against a side well known for embarrassing teams when they are on song.

Newcomers Tierney and Sinclair looked CL quality even in that pumping.

I know I'm not giving out about that, I'm saying I don't think that it will be a regularity for us and we shouldn't expect it to be.

I thought Tierney looked very nervous mate. He done some good things but he also panicked like * when in possession in his own half.

Not surprising though and like everyone else he should get a chance to redeem himself.

I think the thing with Barca is, they press you so much that you end up having to try things 40 yards further back than what you are used to, and with he opposition hunting you in packs.

We should have been defending further up the park, I thought that was the object of the exercise, with five in midfield, five who would work their socks off and look to keep possession. I would have gone with Forrest Brown, Rogic, Armstrong and Sinclair in midfield. Bitton is a shirker, we all know that by now, he shouldn't have been anywhere near that team. Pity he wasn't transferred the last window. And then of course we had Wanyama flapping his gums on the forum all the time about how Roberts must play.ahead of Forrest How did that one work out now Wanyama ?

That's the thing, Barca don't give you that option when they are in the mood.

The plan should have been to stifle them, suffocate them in midfield, and cut off the oxygen supply to their front three. That way we would have forced them to rethink their own game plan.It was suicide to start with Bitton as the DM.

By CL quality I mean players who are capable of taking games by the scruff of the neck at that level and performing year after year consistently.

We have players who could hold their own but in order to be classed as a seriously competitive CL club you need more than that. It relates to my point about not being a 'huge' club on the field. We might not be ever again purely because of the way football is going. Keane for example is looking from the outside in. Easy for him to talk about us celebrating getting in being a bit of a ridneck but that is where we are now as a club. In order to aim for more than that you need to spend money far beyond what we are capable of spending.

Biton is a strange one because if he actually pulled his head out his * he'd be one of the players in that side who could be a real player on the European stage. He has the technique, for starters.

Last person I'd say was genuinely that was Henrik though. The rest were holding their own or playing above their level.

It could have been achieved with the right personnel. You can only pish with the * you've got.

I've looked at the game again, and I think the goalkeeper is to blame for two of them, and he is still not convincing me he is any better than Gordon YET.He crouches too low on his line and makes himself look diminutive when he is actually 6ft 1 :smiley-laughing002:A bit of chocolate wrists at that free kick too, stronger hand keeps it out.
That makes it 5-0 then. Better midfield, that game might have ended up 2-1 or 3-1 if we had scored the penalty.
Still would have been * beat though :smiley-laughing002:

    Aye, I acknowledge that.

I've added to my post there after you quoted. I'm sounding like I expect us to buy these players in when in reality I am saying the opposite. Talking about Keane saying we are a 'huge' club etc and should be aiming for more which in fairness, perhaps we should. At the same time though a bit of realism is needed.

I'm trying to make the point that too many folk set their expectations too high and still think of us being at a level which we may not ever reach again. Not saying Deebo there btw because that isn't what he is getting at, I know.

Aye his punts forward weren't as good as they usually are and you can't blame him when Barca are pressing so fast. But if anyone can find footage of anything getting past him I'd like to see it. He blocked everything that came his way.

All their goals came down our right hand side.

What highlighted our problem was Brown or Bitton getting the blame for the first goal. With 5 at the back should we really have been relying on our DMs to mark that space Messi ran into?

Alba and Neymar tore us to shreds down that side. I think Neymar got 4 assists as well as a goal.

I can't see Tierney getting hammered like that, he's too good at tackling to get outpassed like that.

That is right. Our right flank was brutally exposed all night. Tierney was also getting pulled out of position on the other side covering for Bitton's *.
The right back position worries me. I hope we don't find ourselves having to go hunting for another one in January.
Tell you what. If that was Callum Paterson the other night there, he would have snapped that * Neymar.
