It doesn't matter if its a national angthen or not its still in the same vain as most Irish hero songs. They only offend people that don't know a basic level of history or would happily lump all forms of the IRA together to fuel their ignorant agenda.

Would you stop The Fields Of Athenry?

See this bullshit about sing only 'Celtic' songs at games - you do realise that would mean songs such as YNWA, LTPS, This Land is your Land, Fields of Athenry etc couldn't be sung under that logic. What you're really saying is sing anything that doesn't mention the 'IRA' or whatever, and thats fine if that's how you feel, but at least just come out and say that.

    Spot on.

Some seem to think that "IRA" is a dirty phrase, it's not.

Not to us it's not, but to a large majority of the people in this Country it is. Not saying that's right or fair, just a fact.

People find it offensive. It's that simple.

I thought about this statement last night. And I have came to conclusion that those people must be horribly ignorant individual.

I say that because I don't lump all actions of British Army together like they do with the IRA..

We know the evil acts the British Army have committed in Ireland and in other lands but I don't call the people the fought during the World Wars scum because of the actions of others in different times in history and recent history.

That's probably the media's fault. They love to portray Britain's enemy has scummy terrorist murder gangs.

They did it with the The Volunteers and the old Irish Republican Army and they do it now.

Its not surprising but it blinkers a lot of people.

The answer is simple. Sing football songs. If we stay away from politics etc, it will just irritate the huns and the media more.

But then the only reason the songs aren't sung would be for a cheap-point scoring exercise as opposed to any strong belief one way or another.

I strongly believe that olives are bogging, yet you don't hear me singing about that every match, it has just as much to do with football as the IRA do.

The PIRA has never done worse than anything the British Army have done. The British army are the biggest terrorists in the world yet they get made out to be heroes.

If William Wallace was about today he would have been forced to use the methods of the PIRA.

I don't see your point to be honest.

I take you'll be wanting us to stop singing The Fields Of Athenry. Just Can't Get Enough, The Soldiers Song, Let The People Sing, This Land Is My Land ete etc etc.

Just admit you have a problem with Irish hero songs.

bullshit. Football grounds are one place where like-minded people can actually come together and voice their displeasure at something. It always has been, not just in Britain. Fans of Barcelona use football to let it be known their feelings politically, it's been used throughout history, during the Prague Spring etc. Like it or not football will always be an outlet for political expression.

See if I went to Barcelona and told them to stop all this Catalan * as it has nothing to do with football.

I would rightfully get a kick to the nuts.

See protests like we've seen recently against the SNPs legislation - does that have no place at football?

If this was the case why is it that these types of issues & happenings do not occur at rugby grounds or why fans of opposite sides can sit beside one another & mingle freely at the cricket, baseball, AFL, rugby etc without incident?

I stated it happens in football grounds for a reason - some football teams attract people of a particular political leaning i.e Celtic - socialism, republicans (sweeping generalisation I know) whereas Rangers ( Unionists) etc - it doesn't happen at every football side, just like it doesnt happen at every sporting event. Football, though, is a place where like-minded people can express political feelings.
