The following are sending off offences, as quoted from the official FIFA laws of the game.
Obviously we can rule out all but the first 2 without question. I don't see how the tackle comes under either of the first 2 either. It wasn't malicious. He didn't set out to hurt him. 2 footed, yes, but he won the ball cleanly. He didn't catch Whittaker. He didn't even have his studs up, they were ON THE FLOOR. Given this, I don't see how the tackle could be deemed either serious or violent.

There has been a precedent set for two-footed challenges being punishable by a red card and I think the majority of the footballing world both knows and accepts this. Even though he won the ball, it was two-footed, and I understand why he was sent off for it. Cha's is the more debatable of the two incidents for me.

I felt in the game it looked a red to me and thats in the same timeframe the ref had to call it. He's a young lhad, he'll learn.

it doesnt matter, its common knowledge, players are told not to go in two footed, Wanyama did, and got sent off, his fault, no one elses

I love Wanyama, and hate to admit it, but it's a red card. We can sit here and debate whether or not two-footed challenges should always lead to an automatic red, but the fact is that in the modern game, you will never get away with it. Wanyama's been playing in the country long enough to know that.
No complaints with that decision. -
by the letter of the law yes it was a red,but in reality it shouldn'tbe as it is not dangerous and he also wins the ball, whittaker was high and over the ballso he should have been off too

Agreed, did you see how long it took him to get it out for Bacanegra. Thought I saw a tear in his eye when he flashed it.
Both decisions were marginal but in time honoured tradition who gets the benefit of the doubt.
The offside that never was, was conveniently ignored. I'm making excuses I know because once again we didn't turn up for the massive games.
Can't remember the last time we really kicked them when they are down. They wanted it more and once again we looked a shadow of the team that got us into this position.
Lenny needs to bring in some experience over the summer because this young team needs help to get over the line. -
OK, can someone explain why two footed sliding challenges are "bad"?

I just said this in the match thread, when you go in 2 footed with your studs up most refs are gonna send you off. 10 years ago they wouldn't. Its just how the game has changed.

How doesn't it matter? The rules are there to be followed. I've posted from the rules in the OP, Wanyama's tackle doesn't come under any of them, hence it's allowed. The reason 2 footed tackles are usually punished by red cards is because they are often over the top of the ball/leading with the studs, and hence they are dangerous. This comes under serious foul play. Wanyama didn't follow through on Whittaker. He didn't lead with his studs. In fact his studs were on the floor. In no way was that tackle violent or dangerous, so by the letter of the law it's not a red card.

Exactly.
It wasn't a red card as it wasn't violent and it wasn't serious foul play.
The referees are SO inconsistent with everything that the game is turning into a mockery (or rather has already turned into a mockery).
I've mentioned before that if a card had to be shown here it should have been yellow and no more but a red? No way.
This is where common sense should come into it instead of the letter of the law BUT even in that letter of the law posted it's STILL not a red card. -
