Hampden and * understands that Celtic are continuing to pursue an early release of Hibs stopper Gary Caldwell, with the Glasgow side ready to offer frozen out Stanislav Varga as a sweetener in a like for like replacement, as a final move to complete the aquisition of Gary Caldwell with immediate effect.
Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is anxious to progress with the re-building of the Celtic defence after Saturday's capitulation to Dundee United and sees Caldwell as a key factor in the process.
Meanwhile, rumours are abounding in Leith that Varga will be a Hibs player by the close of the January transfer window.
What is not clear how the Hoops player would be accommodated into the Easter Road wage bill, and if unresolved, this may be the key issue that frustrates Strachan's ongoing courting of the Leith club for Caldwell's services. Hampden and * can only speculate that a loan-deal for Varga may be the only feasible option.
