Can only speak from my owns family name but my great granny Mallon came to Scotland in the must have been the 1920's. But in general there is many other names derived from one clan. Like mines, Mallon...which is O'Meallain, But there is...Mallin, Mallen...even some Mullens, etc. Pretty much come from the same name/clan in Tyrone.

Never ever used the English version or slave name if you will :D, always have my surname down as Ó Tuama. By the way if you're serious about translating your name inti Irish never ever use the ' for example O'Tuama its not correct its wrong always use the Ó Tuama always put a fada over the O óóóóóóó :)

Do you normally pronounce your surname with a hard 'e'? Like 'ee'? I believe the Irish pronunciation would be a softer "eh", "ey" sound. But I may be wrong and you might want to double check!

It's a bit like Murphy/Ó Murchadha then, because there's no 'f' in the Irish pronunciation in ours! It happens with Anglicisations. So go with Oo Mulvey for pronunciation. :celt_2:

Is Liam de Paor your cousin or something? I read some of his texts about Irish history.

I think there have to be. Maybe your name isn't of Gaelic origin, but I am sure that Jewish, Greek or other names from Christian tradition have their Gaelic variant.

The Irish adapted the name to their own pronunciation and spelling, producing the name Seán. Sean is commonly pronounced Shawn (Seán), but in the northern parts of Ireland (owing to a northern dialect), it is pronounced "Shan", "Shen" or "Shayn" (Séan, with the accent on the e instead of the a), thus leading to the variant Shane ( if I can say, the most beautiful Irish female name, one of my favourite Irish names)

I am a bit confused now...
John, Jean comes from Jewish language and it means "The Lord is gracious" and Seán means "*’s gracious gift".

Jovan and Ivan are both used in Serbian language, probably the same goes for Eoin and Sean.

OK, thanks, but there are some people with name in Irish and surname in English and the opposite, name is in English and surname is in Irish.

Wait you mean your British birth certificate is in your Irish name and the DVLNI refused to accept it? I wouldn't change your name, I'd take this right to the very top.
