He's a completely different player than Caldwell. He's more of a non nonsense than a "I'm the new Beckenbuaer" type.

    * sake, trying to argue who is best between Gary Caldwell and Christophe Berra is like asking who you'd prefer standing behind you - Louie Spence or Graham Norton :87:

    Graham Norton, without doubt :56:

I'd take Berra; only if he's not first choice. We're losing Rogne, Gershon loan has ended. Leaves us with Ambrose, Mulgrew and Wilson. We need to strengthen, it's very low risk, we know what he can do, he knows the SPL and he does have some experience against a very high standard of player.

I don't think he'd be a bad partner for Wilson if injuries made him needing to partner him. He's a big guy that attacks everything; something we don't have just now.

I'd be extremely underwhelemed if he was signed as anything but a back up though.

I think he's an atrocious footballer personally mate.

I'd sooner see the youth players being introduced as back up before wasting cash on someone like Berra.

If not for Marcus Fraser's injury I'd agree about the youngsters.

Arsenal will listen to £5m bids for Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen, 27, even though the player is keen to remain with the Gunners.

Burst the bank for him :))

We've got Toshney to come back from his loan as well. I know he probably won't be in contention for a regular starting place, but he'll do for back-up.

His wages would be a massive hurdle, plus he could get CL football in a better league.

    Berra is what, 28 now?

Given that he's a free transfer, and his wages wouldn't be too high I'd take him on.

In terms of ability, no, he's not the best. But in terms of attitude and experience he is a worthwhile player.

He has played in the EPL & Internationally, and knows the SPL. He's the kind of aggressive centre-half I think we could do with for certain games.

I'm not sure Berra would be bullied by the likes of Daly & Higdon to the extent our other defenders have been at times.

He's about as aggressive as a Grannie with no teeth.

Looked promising a few years back, but has not shown much signs of improvement.

    No thanks.

That's the way I look at it. Quite happy for him to be Gershon's and Rogne's replacements. Would be raging if he is our number one target at centre back though.

You've probably seen more of him than me. Just think an older head, who has played at a good level and has SPL experienced shouldn't be immediately dismissed.

Before this season he'd played at a higher level than any of our defenders.

Nah, he's not one to get pulses racing but would be a solid, pragmatic signing.

A couple of Wolves fans I know want him gone. Even now they're in League 1.

Berra? You might as well play with 10 men with him in your team sometimes.

    * me guys. Berra? Jesus christ. He's pure dog * and every time ive seen him play he has been * poor. A league 1 type player thats not even wanted by a league 1 team! Not worthy of a Celtic jersey at all.

    Jack McInerney...

Now the last time I randomly threw a player up on here before we were linked and Celtic actually signed him was Cha Du Ri after he played really well in the World Cup... so....
