Are you suggesting that our defensive problems stem from the manager and how he sets up his team? I'd say it's a mixture of that and players not being good enough.

I suppose it's more the manager. Look what Walter Smith did with a very poor Rangers team.

    100k+ a week wages.

We couldn't even afford him if half of it were subsidised, nor would City be allowing a player that doesn't need developing to join us anyway.

Lenny's team getting humped out of the Champions League last 16 was also largely down to Ambrose though.

You can set your defence up anyway you want but a player like Ambrose is still a liability and shouldn't be anywhere near Celtic. I think you're actually putting too much responsibility on the coach/manager here, the best coach in the world couldn't have prevented Ambrose from doing what he did against Fenerbahce, it was his own stupidity.

It is a managers responsibility to get the best out of his team yes, but you simply can't blame the manager for errors such as the one Ambrose made against Fener. Comes down to the players.

Papa Alioune Ndiaye, moved from the Norwegian league to the Turkish league. 11 goals this season. Attacking midfield, can also play defensive or central midfield.

Higher end of the scale quite a few teams are lining up this guy, he's 17 and scored 9 in 11 games for Brazil's under 17's. It's a dodgy market Brazil, but at some point if you want the mega transfer sell on this would be your man.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leandrinho/profil/spieler/351898.

On the defensive side i'd have a look at Nicolai Boilesen from Ajax.

Nicolai Naess a centre back from Stabaek who can play right back. He'd be my replacement for old twinkle toes ambrose.

On the development level Rick van Drongelen, he's 17 and played 5 games for the Dutch under 19's. He's being watched by some big clubs, but right now he's at Sparta Rotterdam. Centre back, also plays left back.

Pele van Anholt, injured just now, but a good free from Heerenveen at right back, also can cover for defensive midfield.

It was but the last 16 is an insanely high level for us and it was a daft decision to play him in the first place.

We aren't going to get better than Van Dijk and Denayer, lets be honest with that, we shipped goals in Europe with them two as well. So when we had the same problem with players whose quality was breaking our usual glass ceiling, what do you do? You change the team, so that it won't be shipping as many goals.

No point being negative about glass ceilings and the last 16 being as far as we can go.

That's exactly the sort of thinking i guessed the board had when we got to the last 16.

Lets not sign anyone, this is as far as it goes. Maybe with what we have we can go further. Well Hooper did * all in that game but cost us a goal in the away leg.

We knew at the time Efe was in Africa, so the sensible thing is mixed with a step backwards to take a step forwards.

So the 8-9million for Hoops then would have meant we could have went a bit daft in the transfer window.

Instead we wait and we end up with utter garbage and that then takes time to sort out if nobody wants to buy the players.

So i think in relative terms, getting this right has taken years and you learn along the way.

I'm just not sure it's worth having the whole thing * dictated too by folks who've never built a team before, or played at a high level, making the signings.

If you stop and think about it it's fuckeen retarded to have the manager having his squad picked for him by people who have never actually managed or played football before.

We all remember Henke's top tip, a £2.5million striker who could barely control a football, and he was not the worst.

Boerrigter, Pukki, Balde etc. The list is huge.

So if that is part of the curve and we stop making these * dire choices then we can go on with Ronny, possibly.

Why because if you want the best free signings, you better get busy as soon as the window opens. For that you'll need stability.

It is also a question of whether players want to come here because they like the manager. Get the right players and you can't go wrong.

But i just look at Efe getting a new three year deal as being utter madness. A deal offered to Forrest has been knocked back, and he's been * for years.

Some players need to move on for their own benefit.

My bet is Park and co are more wary now and that can be good, but it really does depend on those * coming over here and having a look at who we want signed.

Is it not as much mental as physical with him though ? He strikes me as the sort of player that would need far more attention spent on him than the rest of the squad. O'Neill could have maybe got the best out of him but I can't see Ronny pandering to him as much as would be required. If 'arry couldn't do it then I don't think many managers could.

    No doubting his talent though.

Jinty Caenepeel - FC Eindhoven - Right wing. 19 years old
    15 goals and 6 assists

He's 19 and has 7 caps for the Belgian under-19 team. Good prospect and replacement for Forrest.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jinty-caenepeel/profil/spieler/235234

    Ludwig Augustinsson 21 years old.
Left back from FC Copenhagen. Swedish international - delivery from the left and cover for Tierney. Izzy looks on the way out and Tierney seems to be on the radar of a few clubs now and money talks. At the end of the day, if the big bid comes in from a team like Liverpool it would be a remarkable turnaround. £8-10million would be difficult to knock back.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ludwig-augustinsson/profil/spieler/170646

    Kevin Diks - Vitesse Arnhem
    Right back
19 years old and capped for the Dutch under 21's already.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kevin-diks/profil/spieler/335209

Simon Tibbling is a 21 year old from Groningen.
Plays central midfield, left midfield and defensive midfield.
    21 caps for Sweden's under 21 side.

Caenepeel would be good, don't know about Augusinsson, Diks is a good player but I have enough faith in Janko and Lustig. Tibbling hasn't really shown much at Groningen.

Janko might be one for next season, but as of right now i have no faith in him. Lustig is, as we know solid at right back but i'm not sure i'd want to go into Europe with him being the only really solid right back we have. Europe is a different ballgame altogether and it depends on how far you want to go.

At the start of the campaign we're gonna have to be alot tougher to break down. Look at Leicester they beefed the team up and it's had the desired effect.

We need to try something similar or we'll be lucky to get to the groups and then you need to be able to handle teams like Barcelona.

So from that point of view Lustig just doesn't do it for me, i think we need more pace down both sides.

It's looking like a good window for left backs, but right back also needs looking at otherwise how do you improve the defense?

Also right and left midfield. Now this isn't a strong part of Ronny's system and basically what the system means is that the wingers press and support the striker, but not supporting the defender will lead to another unsuccessful campaign, i'm pretty sure about that.

Otherwise it's whether we can outscore teams, which could be a possibility.

Janko's injured all the time and so is Simunovic. So that doesn't bode well for next season so it's gonna take some sorting out.

So if we can add the right players on top of the quality we have, anything is possible.

Caenepeel being in the second league might be quite cheap to buy, Augusinsson was being chased by Liverpool last i heard. Copenhagen have a really good defensive record
wouldn't be the worst place to look for a defender.

Who would you suggest from the Dutch league to make us more difficult to beat in Europe?

To beat in Europe makes this a lot harder. Few players I think would come in and really lift the team. Defence wise I see where you're coming from Diks would be a good addition but I doubt he'd be a squad player.

Jahanbaksh and Vilhena I think would be excellent additions. As well as Joris van Overeem, Rusnak, Vilhena and Qazaisvili(?) I reckon they would be realistic and good signings. Obviously Ajax and PSV have a few gems but I doubt we could get them.
