The plot is *, and with the notable exception of Rickman, the acting is horseshit. To be classed as a great film it has to be more than just entertaining for me. It has to have some substance to it or to be groundbreaking in some way.
Having uber criminals who always seem to know EXACTLY how the cops are going to react to every situation is so far fetched that it is laughable. The scene where the gun strap gives way and he falls about 10 feet yet manages to grab a tiny ledge in a shaft is just so unrealistic that it doesn't bare thinking about.
I enjoyed the film, but as others have said, the problem with the genre is that you have to switch your brain off on entry to the cinema to appreciate it.

Can't believe folk are questioning Shawshank's credentials.

I listened to my old man go on and on about it for years, eventually watched it in my teenage years and it was an incredible film. Everything about it works.

I wish I'd never seen it so I can experience the film in its entirety for the first time again, it's one of those types.

Fair enough. For me, it's certainly nowhere near my list of favourite films but it's clearly a classic. Successful both critically and commercially and, perhaps most importantly, it's still stood the test of time.

The genre isn't for everyone, but for those that enjoy that genre it's one of the best there is.

East is East, that's another great film.

I'm probably gonna spend the next few weeks remembering more obscure films I should have mentioned.

You just haven't seen enough of the classics otherwise you wouldn't think that list is ridiculous as you think it is unlike the one in this thread which is totally bonkers :giggle1:

A lot of the 'classics' listed aren't all that.

Well, to be fair, when the criteria to make the cut on this list was for 2 people to say they liked a particular movie, it naturally is hard to make the arguemnt for any list to be in any way definitive, lol.
