Ford Focus.

You'd get a nice 320d for that around the 2005/06 mark.
Any other desirable attributes, 7 grand with a big boot opens you up to a world of options. -
I've a Honda civic and I love it,with having a baby get the 5 door.I have the 3 door which is no good for a baby.I also used to have an avensis which was a brilliant family car.
-
Check out what taxi drivers are driving coz they're looking for similar benefits,i.e. reliable, big boot.
skoda octavia, toyota avensis, vectra, mondeo, seem to be the preferred
choice round here, estates are well represented & give you that extra space, especially if the missus is getting broody:icon_mrgreen:Last edited by a moderator: Feb 11, 2013 -

7 grand would get you a decent Sapphire Cosworth and of course you have a big saloon's boot for all your shopping.

& a few speeding tickets. -

Aye focus is a good shout even a mondeo or a VW passat
Have you thought about getting a lease deal there are some good deals about for about £200 ish a month
If you know someone to go to car market with you get good deals on ex fleet high mileage motors usually ex salesmen motors with a lot off motorway miles on them with good service history
Bought my mrs a 10 plate Passat in car market and she loves it -
If it's reliability you're after then you can't go wrong with German manufacturers like VW and Japanese, Honda, Toyota etc. Civic is a good choice and has a decent boot.
If you want to go for something like a BMW 3 series you'd need to go for one with a bigger mileage, although the boot in the 3 series isn't generous for a saloon. -
Don't get a diesel civics my advice. Chocolate clutches, weak dmfs, if you are budget another 1k on top for an upgraded clutch.. Speaking from experience.
-
At your budget I would go Japanese too. Don't be fooled by this VW reliability myth. They have more than their fair share of issues.
Forget a diesel if you don't do big miles. Modern diesels come with DPFs fitted to lower soot output and if you don't do regular big journeys it will fail.
You will end up witb a bill for a healthy amount. Many cars around £1000.
The Civic is a good shout or something like a Toyota Auris. -
sorry I didn't reply last night but I am nightshift and was away to work. I really like the mondeo and the bmw but the missus doesn't like them. I like the passat too and the civic and I would get diesel as you need to be doing a lot of miles of it to make economic sense. thanks for all your help guys.

Really can't go wrong with a Focus. Great to drive, spacious and reliable. My uncle has had one for 7 years from new and after nearly 100,000 miles it's never skipped a beat.

The DPF can be removed if you are that worried about it. Personal preference as well but I would always have a diesel over the petrol variant and I drive a 3.5L V6. Much prefer the low down torque for every day driving. -

Don't by a BMW they are pish try an Audi
-
Audi are far too expensive for what you get. VW fall into that as well. -
The DPF can be removed but often causes running issues on many cars. Also if the DPF was fitted to the car originally it is required to pass an MOT.
Most people just want a car to get from A-B without worrying about things.
Personally I hate diesel. There isn't a good 4 cylinder diesel car out there. All very unrefined.
Some cars are better like the BMW 335d but you would have to be daft to pick a 335d over the superior 335i.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 11, 2013 -
Not very detailed but here is a recent report from warranty direct about warranty claims.

It will be the BMW 320d that kills BMW stats. It has major issues with DPF and turbos to name a few.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 11, 2013
