strachans record is second to none, but he should be doing better with his finances and players at his disposal

walter (older than nostradamus) smith would be dreaming he had a squad like ours

LOL hardly a fair comparison. Mad Vlad is only half way towards his plan of turning Swynecastle into flats and a Tesco.

And good on him I say.

I'm only trying to point out that barring a bad performance at Love Street we've been playing quite well since New Year.

i love celtic, i just have a bad feeling about this side and its a * good squad at that (even with really good players out on loan)

i can count the good performaces on one hand for a while now.

with the money we are spending and the advantages we have at the moment, we will all regret this current situation

Or you could be completely wrong and we'll win the league.

Im a wee bit off topic with this debate..

Second time today I've seen a Scotland comment which is exactly how I felt.. Three games cost us qualification.. Ukraine started the rot (Smith played a back five in that game) Italy away under Mcleish with one up front which was damage limitation , and Georgia away was played with some of our better players rested and the players who did play stood off and let the opposition dictate..

All those three games had an uncanny resemblance of what went on in the Nou Camp..

When Scotland beat France in Paris with one shot on target , the tactics were hailed as a masterstroke , then the huns followed suit by boring Barcelona to a draw and we went to Benfica that same week (with Mcdonald left out to favour this dour tactic) and it nearly paid off (conceding with 5 minutes to go)..

Since then we've seen the huns continue to use this tactic in almost every big game at home or away.. I just hope the Barca game wasn't a case of Strachan showing his intentions to resort to it (as someone suggested) as some kind of dress rehearsal for Ibrox.. Its horrible football to watch..

The other comment someone posted was that Craig Brown (as old as Walter) always chose players from a small squad , he picked them on experience (just like Roxburgh he loved his age 30+ players) and the fact many of them played in England (Gary Holt , Matt Elliot , Colin Cameron , Neil Sullivan) were no better than what he had playing up here at the time and in the process he totally ignored young scottish talent (Eoin Jess , Mark Burchill , Scott Booth , Stewart Kerr , Charlie Miller to name a few) and by the time he left the job (after failing to qualify for Euro 2000 and WC 2002) Bertie Vogts had * all to build from.. Leaving no legacy or platform to continue a success is something that happens often when a manager vacates his post , by choice or by force.

Martin O Neil left an ageing squad and I know people have said things like Sutton was left out in Bratislava when we needed him , Thompson didn't get a fair crack , and Hartson could have stayed another year , and Agathe too , but I always felt progression was moving these guys on at the time he did.. The only thing which may back up those thoughts is he often makes a real strange tactical switch (Hartley to left back , throwing Pressley into the team , Sticking Killen up front against Benfica)..

As to who is the best of Strachan and Smith , I'll not commit myself yet but whoever wins the title this season will be in pole position..

    So Gordon it is then..

Nope. If that happens I'll assume we'll turn them over twice at CP. That's my prediction and I'm happy to say it.

Celtic winning 3 titles in a row is something the fans need.. Even if it's a slight papering over the cracks to buy time untill we get a much more efficient team together because I can see us eventually getting to another level with the spine of this team.. It might take upto 3 more years from now or longer but I believe it will happen under Strachan.. It's been great since the huns dominance finished with us winning around two out of every 3 titles but it hurts to think this should be us going for 4 in a row.. To win it 3 years in succession shows dominance and I would happily give the little finger on my left hand to medical science to make it happen..(maybe)

We haven't done 3 in a row since the late 70's during Jock's dominant era so it's going to be one * of a celebration when we do it in May..

And if Lawell is deadly serious about funding a Strachan spending spree which hopefully doesn't involve selling to fund new signings then we are part way through a major rebuilding with an aim to dominate Scottish football for some time.. I've been guilty of getting my hopes up many times before and believeing we're about to achieve greatness and with Henrik we very nearly did.. Im going to keep believing that we'll get there in the end..

Rangers prolonged involvement in the UEAFA Cup plus the CIS Cup Final and the Scottish Cup should help us with our SPL hopes, their squad will be really stretched

Would any of the following players come to Bayern Munich? For that matter, FC Porto? Borussia Dortmund?

    Henry
    Ronaldo
    Kaka
    Totti
    Messi
    Eto'o
    Torres
    Drogba
    Cannavaro

    The answer is no.

The last thing we need to make is more excuses. Fair enough, most teams we play against have a better chance of landing bigger players, but it doesn't make it impossible. What if we drew Fenerbahce this year? Possible we'd be in the last 8.

its al about perspective, says the ginger strachan

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan believes context is the key to analysing the Parkhead club's exit from the Champions League in midweek.
The Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions lost 1-0 to Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Tuesday to go out 4-2 on aggregate to the star-studded Catalan giants.
Strachan, who is preparing his side for the Scottish Cup quarter-final tie against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Sunday, believes his players did their club and Scotland proud by simply reaching the last 16 of the competition for the second season in succession.
"There is a lot we can take from the games against Barcelona. We can take the fact that we had to win the league to get to that stage," he said.
"We beat Spartak Moscow (in the qualifier) when they were on top of their form and playing on a plastic pitch.
"We can say that we got rid of Shakhtar and Benfica (in the group stages) and we can say that we got to the same stage as Real Madrid, Seville and Lyon and either Liverpool or Inter Milan.
"A lot of big clubs left at the same time as us so there is nothing to be embarrassed about.
"There are a lot more positives than negatives."
Strachan added: "We can be proud of being in the last 16 for the last two years, that's good for a small nation.
"We learned that when we are at our best, we are not far away.
"There is a gulf between the real top clubs and ourselves but at our best we can give good teams a game."

    ////////////////////////////////

lets look at what he says here,,,,we can be proud
we got to last 16, 2 years in a trot,,,yes we did gordon wits your point,,,we limped out of the compitition as if we werent botherd.

2)we got to play barca because we win the title,,,doh weeman we know this already

3)teams like real madrid ,seville and lyon are out to "he says",,,we know this gordon whats your point ,,if they wernt out there opponents would be,,whats yer piont gordon,,

    4) loseing to barca is nout to be embarrassed about,,,who said anything about being embarrased we man,,i think you felt embarressed , i stiill cant se the point your trying to make

5(he says we beat spartak "on a plastic pitch" wow wee,,i am glad u told us this as we all forgot ,ffs

6(there are more positives than negatives he says,,,wee man get a friggin grip we were very negative and have been for ages in awaymatches in CL ,or am i missing his point

7)the last 16 is good for a small nation, he says"mmm and whats the point this time,we have always known we are a small nation,,dident we,?

8)we learned that at our best we are not far away,,,he said,,,far away from what an away win,,a decent result/performance wit does he mean?

9)he goes on to tell us ,"theres a gulf between us and top sides in europe" tnx gordon,we were all wondering why we can win away games ,,now we know eh

Bayern Munich quite possibly. I don't really get what your trying to say here.

We are not going to do much more in Europe while we play in Scotland.

Hoopy m8 I live in spain and because of this I get a lot of english news papers.Since Seville the press had been very complimentary towards our exploits in europe, this had made a change from the usual drivel they used to print.

However the longer we get humped away in europe the more negative the press become and until we can rectify our away perforemances I can only see opinion getting worse.I mean Olympiakos used to get slaughtered for their useless away record now even they are winning away from home and the batton has now been handed to us.

In all honesty Hoopy if you was a suporter of another regular CPL club and you got Celtic in your group.Imiediately you would be thinking automatic home 3 points but difficult away game. Now how many other sides in europe do you think the same about.i.e if we get them automatic home 3 points etcetc. As for me we have an amazing home record although theses games we have won at home where never described before hand as automatic 3 points for us.Also future games probably wont be considred this way in future either.

My point is the longer we go on as the whipping boys away from home in europe it is un-avoidable that our standing will erode as it is doing currently.

is it alsa a false impression if celtic win the league ,you play 38 games are they all lucky i dont think so,cant all be false if tou beat the likes if milan benfica man u ,and so on . are they * or is it parkhead, i would rather be a last 16 team hands down than playing in the uefa cup, its called progrees never no,who to say we dont make it to the last 8 all it takes is a wee bit of luck in the draw , but money is the ruler here ,celtic can only compete within there needs ,its a drawback ,i believe even if pl released ,40million to buy a few quality players they wont come , cos of our league, you might get a better class of player but no world beaters
