How do you see the Tories being the opposition furthering the cause of Independence? I'm not seeing that one.

Yeah it is, if we cant get independence soon we could be stuck with a Tory government in Westminster for the foreseeable future.

Looks like Labour get 4 on list, Tories 2 and Greens 1 (Glasgow)

TT, similar pattern in Angus South for me. Graeme Dey holding but down and a significant jump from the Tory woman. The fact she's blonde and half decent maybe swayed it :smiley-laughing002:

I'm really surprised by the turnouts and the amount of Tory votes.

Just as I predicted, tens of thousands of SNP list votes counting for nothing and allowing Tories to sneak in the back door. :87:

Nah you argued with me to ignore the polls when I said they were about to become the opposition actually :56:

Both my votes counted so I'm happy.

I think the voting system has been shown up tonight. It punishes success and rewards failure.

Just as I'm typing this, the WoS region has elected 3 Tories, 3 Labs and a Green... The SNP had more votes than all of them combined!

No I didn't. I conceded that they might end up as the main opposition party after this election.

Where I did disagree with you is that I don't believe they are going to become a serious force in Scottish politics, and by serious force I mean a party that is ever capable of winning a Scottish election or going close to winning a Scottish election. I 100% stand by that.

Precisely why I was telling people not to give both their votes to the SNP.

I get what you're saying but I think it's a problem with the voting system rather than people's voting intentions. A proportional system should aim for fairness, how is it fair that a party with by far and away the most votes gains no seats?

What was the alternative to voting SNP on the regional ballot? The Greens? or some ridiculous commie party? :smiley-laughing002:

If people understood how the electoral system works then they could have voted differently with the same intentions and we'd have less Tories in Holyrood than we're now going to have. The unfortunate thing is that it's quite a complex voting system and a lot of people don't fully get how it works. The only reason I have a decent grasp of it is that I did Modern Studies at school and part of that subject was looking at different electoral systems.

I can't be arsed doing an explanation of it at 8am when I've been up all night watching the results come in :smiley-laughing002: but the basic principle is, if the SNP won the vast majority of the constituency seats(which they did and were always going to do) then the list votes are there to balance things out. So most of the votes the SNP get on the list end up counting for nothing and the list seats are dished out to the other parties to reflect the overall vote percentages.

I know you don't rate the Green Party but if Independence was your #1 priority then voting SNP and Green would have been a very shrewd way to go. Better that than giving two votes to the SNP and having one of your votes rendered meaningless.
