I know this is based on ITK, but the 2 players we are after are supposed to break our transfer record. Then again, maybe that story is pish, like most.

I don't think the fee matters mate.

I always considered Dembele to be a marquee signing when we got him on a free the first time. It was a statement of intent. Tete would be the same IMO.

Who said he was promised a marquee signing by the board?

I was listening to a Scottish football journalist on the radio days after Brendan came back and he said he expected Celtic to break our own transfer record possibly even twice in this transfer window alone from what he's heard.

I really can't see this happening at all, unless we seriously shift the fringe players.

Pretty sure Rodgers said about a week ago he's not been promised any sort of major signing. But the money is there for improvement..

Don't think we hand out those kind of promises tbh.

Fair enough, due to my deafness I don't listen to any radio stations but rely on my reading about Celtic news somewhere etc online.

I think people really jumped the gun with talk of getting players in the 10-15m range, it's not impossible but that's big jump for us especially considering the wages players in that bracket start to command. But with the money we have right now, there's no reason we can't go out and sign a couple of players around the levels we spent on jota/ccv/eduoard if we identify them, the biggest issue there is probably just convincing them to come to scotland instead of other leagues if they have offers.

If you believe the rumour mill we are trying to target higher calibre players but they either aren't wanting to come to Scotland or are keeping their options open.

Just can’t get enough Depeche mode
We’re probably trying to offer them £20k a week

To be fair it must be quite difficult.

6 games in the UCL (8-10) next season isn't enough to convince most players. Probably a max of about £50k a week we would offer someone too. Which was a great top level wage 23 years ago but is laughed at by most 'higher profile' or up and coming players now.

    These are good points.

The other thing that should be noted, I remember John Collins talking about this when he was RD's No.2, is that it is only a very small fraction of the number of players that Celtic are linked with that is actually the case. For one thing, why would anyone in Celtic want to talk about a potential link when deals are not done, or could be potentially undermined or hijacked.

Sometimes it is purely 'meeja' speculation, but most of the time we are being linked it is either coming from an agent or from a selling club, looking to use Celtic's name/reputation in trying to generate interest and offers from elsewhere. They know what we can offer in terms of prestige, potential for silverware, European football etc, but at the same time the awareness that other clubs in other competitions can and do have more money to throw about, which for selling clubs and most agents, is what matters most.

Aye. We have a bit of a ceiling unfortunately which is going to be hard to break.

Realistically, players who have impressed at a similar level team to us (e.g. Shakhtar), in a better league, aren't going to be looking for us as their next move. They'll be looking at a top 5 league, just like players do if they perform well with us. I know Tete was obviously a bit of a flop with Leicester but that isn't going to stop him getting a good move as he's obviously talented and people are aware of him.

There will be the odd exception, of course, but I bet they're difficult to find. Which is why we operate in the markets we do.

Would the wording that we put offers on the table with players rather than clubs that are being reviewed not suggest these players are free agents?

Apparently in modern transfers, clubs inquire with agents first, and then if there is at least a tentative agreement, go deal with the clubs. Weird and upside-down IMO, but @McGrory1888 had said it mostly goes like this.

Aye I think it's pretty clear that in most transfers the player is indirectly "tapped up" through their agent.
