Tommy Burns did work with Smith and Ally in Scotland and done a * good job of it.
Alot of fans seem to forget that Rangers and Celtic staff are good mates off the pitch. Look at McManus and Barry Ferguson for example.
The rangers support who were singing that song not only disgraced themselves, but disgraced the people who were in fact friends, close friends, with Tommy Burns from the othrerside of the divide.
Truely less than scum these idiots,.
And to answer the OP, I don't think it was a waste of time coz it wasn't a publicity stunt. Smith and Ally were close to Tommy Burns and felt honoured to carry coffin.

On that emotional day in 2008 when Rangers manager Walter Smith helped carry the coffin of Celtic legend Tommy Burns there seemed at least a fleeting hope that Glasgow's divided footballing tribes might be moving closer together.

The dignity and respect shown by Smith and his successor as Rangers boss Ally McCoist for cancer victim Burns, one of Scotland's finest footballing ambassadors, a true gentleman off the park and a devout Christian, sent out a poignant reminder of how very close these old rivals were off the pitch and the sense of esteem they held each other in.

The generosity of spirit shown that day between old football foes was impressive and will live with me for a long time.

But any hope that one day there may be a better and lasting understanding between the followers of the two clubs received a massive reality check this week when Rangers were in Lisbon for their successful Europa League trip to Sporting Lisbon.

As I watched disturbing images from Portuguese television on Friday of a group of Rangers fans besmirching the memory of Burns with a sick song in a Lisbon square I despaired as I thought of the moving role Smith and McCoist had played at Burns' funeral.

And my first thought was what the straight-talking Smith would have said to this group of his own fans if he had witnessed those obscenely celebrating the death of his old friend.

Words fail me in my attempt to describe these morons. But I think Smith would have had plenty at the ready to deliver a stinging rebuke to those attacking the memory of a great football man.

It's been well broadcast so what's stopping him coming out now and delivering his strong rebuke

Fair play to Brian Mcnally for mentioning the moron huns in Lisbon..

I agree with what he says that smith would have had plenty choice words to say to them if he'd witnessed it , but that will likely be the end of the matter as the huns won't feel a duty to comment on it.. If pushed they would just say that some unwelcome people attach themselves to their club and aren't real football fans and I suppose in a way it's their right to detach themselves from any responsability..

The papers should still name and shame those involved..

Even Graham Speirs was tweeting during the game about their sectarian chants and saying how embarrassing they were to Scottish football :38: They absolutely despise him for always commenting on it

Just sent this email to the daily record, the sun, the Scotsman, the evening times, the herald, the herald on sunday and the news of the world.

    To whomever it may concern,

Present it as you like but in light of recent discussions bouncing around the forums, I feel this shocking footage is news worthy.

This article written by Robert Grieve of the sun (Tommy will be smiling down on me | The Sun |Home Scotland|Scottish Sport|SPL) sparked controversy, as was probably intended, given that Ally Mccoist had mentioned how proud Tommy Burns would be of his appointment. Rangers fans on Rangers Media Forum and Follow Follow were mostly upset that he would mention the ex-Celtic manager in his first press conference at all (in spite of their much publicised friendship) .

The debate had raged on in forums both sides of the old firm divide both with a great deal of disdain for the dissenters Mccoist's remarks. What is shocking is what came out from a report on a Portuguese website on the Rangers fans Europa League visit in Lisbon, posted on some of the forums. Here is the footage and the point of interest starts at 0:27 seconds in.

(actual link sent to them, wont post it here)

This should be brought to the attention of every clear minded Scotsman in the country, of every family who has ever suffered the horrors of cancer, of every child who would otherwise think this acceptable and be condemned. There is no place for this behaviour in a sane society, or even a divided one.

I hope your institution leads the way.

It's amazing how their sectarian stuff is going unchallenged.. In 2008 a journalist reported Celtic fans for singing songs he didn't like , and that was outside the nou camp..
Obviously the club were cleared of any charges but where's the consistency in the media..
During the huns run to the uefa cup final one of the most sickening things was the news bulletins on the days leading to the final , hordes of huns on camera singing the billy boys in the background while the reporter was giving it "it's a great day for scotland , hundred's of thousands of rangers fans in great voice , creating a carnival atmophere here in manchester".. nawww just nawwww..

What do you think McCoist and Smith make of this?

If I was the manager at Celtic and my fans singing about one of my good mates dying I would be out of the door like a shot. No matter how much I love the club.

What do the Rangers management make of so called fans singing about child abuse, the death of TB etc, the bottom line is they have no control over a section of their support.

I didn't watch the video so I don't know how many are involved in the singing but I don't think smith or mccoist are going to be all that affected by it..
Im sure they'll privately be disgusted but that could also be said about their opinions on many of the 40,000 huns that watch them at home 5 times a year and sing the bile..
The one thing huns have to remember when they work for the club is that bigotry/hate is a source of their income.. To make money (or prevent bigger losses) they have to keep the hordes onside..
That's why we see the pathetic "please dont sing these songs because the club will get in trouble" rather than "Anyone caught singing disgusting offensive songs will be banned indefinately"..

Thats me being kind by percieving it that way..
It could just be that the actions of the fans are just mirroring those of the people who run the club , and the reason they don't condemn is because they see nothing wrong..

You're completely wrong here lads, not sayin they didn't break the silence but I was in the Celtic end and their were loads of people booing etc as soon as the silence was called for. It was embarrasing.

Don't want to change the subject though - this is about pure scum whoever they support as has been pointed out we observed the ibrox disaster and rememberence sunday silences impecably (as is right.)
