    It was not racist

    The title a 'Clyde Banana Boat' has always raised a few eyebrows in connection with the vessels owned by Glasgow Corporation and the cargoes they once carried. The origin of the title goes back to the First World War when the ships were used to carry passengers. Hundreds of wounded convalescing soldiers from the Western Front faced a bleak recovery period staring at four walls in Glasgow hospitals until it was suggested that they may like to 'take the air' and were taken out for a day trip down the Clyde during the summer months. The idea caught on and after the war the tradition continued and thousands of Glasgow residents travelled on the daily voyages with the ships being held in high esteem during their service. The somewhat humorous title was bestowed on the ships in part because they were painted in similar colours to a well-known banana shipping company, and also when the vessels were discussed in polite conversation.
