Stupid sayings

I have always thought it might have racist connotations.

 

Coming up the Clyde in a banana boat surely means black folk delivering bananas when the Clyde was a hub of imports and exports.

 

When I was wee and my mum said that to me (our regional version was the Tay not the Clyde) I always used to picture this, and used to think, "that'd be * great fun" and didn't get what she meant at all. But yes, very racist given what it actually means

 

If you break your leg don't come running to me.

 

"Sleep on it. You'll feel better in the morning". Well, no, I am now sleep-deprived and concerned about premature *.

 

"Can't argue with that" find that a bit annoying. Sometimes you can

 

"Whats for ye will no go by ye".

Clearly no destined tae pump kelly brook then

 

This would make a good thread.

 

Surely you would only say that when you can't argue with it though?

That one worked for me.

I was meeting a friend in Glasgow and was about to cross the road at St Enoch Sq when two girls were walking by. I actually turned round and said to one of them "are you going to walk by and not say hello?"

22 years later we are still together.

This kind of story genuinely makes me weep with happiness, sadness, and some bizarre nostalgia over something I've never personally experienced.
