Aye, they probably would have won it if they only went and beat the winners :smiley-laughing002:

They didn't beat Brazil or Portugal so what's your point? They weren't unlucky. They would have been if they had some bad refeering decisions go against them like a goal disallowed or a sending off, but they were fairly beaten. You can't just say if they beat the team that knocked them out they would win, because you could say that for anyone :smiley-laughing002:

Aye, like if Algeria had beaten every team they played, they'd have won the tournament......

    If's and but's.

Respect for him sticking with Liverpool. Always thought Lampard was better though

Steven Gerrard, has there been a more overrated footballer in the history of football? Seriously the guy's rated at a level he shouldn't be at. He's had a few special moments but for the most part he doesn't dominate games like most top class midfielders and has always had periods of seasons where he wouldn't do much.

He's probably a Liverpool legend but even in England I'd say Scholes, Lampard and Beckham were all far better players.

As for England's "Golden Generation", they were a talented bunch, but they never got the right system in place to get the best out of them... they just played a rigid 4-4-2 where no one could express themselves.

There are better players than him, but he's a player that every team wish they had.

They were narrowly beaten by Brazil in 2002. If they had some luck and gotten through then they would've have been massive favorites to win.

In Euro 2004 they had a goal disallowed in the 90th minuted that shouldn't have IIRC.

Perhaps you should read first though, I was only responding to the suggestion that they 'never came close' when, in fact, they came very close.

Id actually say he was better than them, for me he's easily better than Lampard and Beckham, tight between Scholes though, Scholes was a better "footballer" than he was a player, if that makes sense :smiley-laughing002:, he could have been a legend like Xavi or Pirlo but in reality he never really hit the heights of even Gerrard or Lampard, mostly cause he played what was later confirmed to be out of position, he spent the best years of his career masquerading as near enough a forward or attacking midfielder/wide midfielder, when he really should always have played centre-mid.

If I was rating the best English players of my time id put the order as

    1. Gerrard
    2. Ashley Cole
    3. Rooney
    4. Terry or Ferdinand, hard to split them
    6. Lampard
    7. Scholes
    8. Shearer
    9. Beckham
    10. Campbell, Owen and Gary Neville

Scholes really should have been top and Rooney should probably have made it to 2nd but as I mentioned Scholes spent the best years of his career playing in a position in which he wasnt as good as Gerrard or Lampard at and Rooney lost momentum as he got older, still was good though.

    EDIT forgot Shearer and Owen.

Oh yes, they were narrowly beaten...like many other teams. Doesn't mean they'll win it. The fact is, they were beaten. If they were good enough to win it, they would have won. You can put it down to inexperience or some of their players didn't perform well on the day but the fact of the matter is it's still their fault they lost, so they're not unlucky.

I actually mind that Euro 2004 disallowed goal, think Terry impeded the keeper or something like that? Can't remember if it should have stood or not, although that's down to personal opinion more than anything else. Point still stands though.

I did read...the quarter-finals aren't "very close". By that logic, Costa Rica were "very close" to winning the World Cup then?

Great player for Liverpool. One of the truly world class players that England have produced.

Very average for England though and never really seemed to control games like he did for Liverpool.

Still a great servant for England though.

None of England's best players have really performed that well for them I dont think. Would probably say that Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell and Michael Owen have played the best for England.

Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Beckham, Ferdinand, Terry, G.Neville never really played that well for England, not as good as they were at Club level.

I don't understand why he was never as good for England - Lampard aswell. Then they always went on about the Lampard/Gerrard dilemma.

All of their best players really played worse with England than at Club level. Only few I can think of who've played as good or arguably better for England than at Club level are...

    David James
    Sol Campbell
    Ashley Cole
    Owen Hargreaves
    Joe Cole
    Emile Heskey
    Michael Owen
    Peter Crouch

James Milner probably does too although hes not very good, neither was Heskey right enough. Shearer too I imagine although I canny really recall him playing for England.

All the others Seaman, Neville, Carragher, Ferdinand, Terry, Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard, Walcott, Rooney havent played as well.

Forgot Peter Crouch there too he had a good England career.

The bloke handed in a transfer request, Liverpool Fans were burning shirts with his name on, he had agreed the deal with Chelsea, it was only after a late night visit by some "influential" fans, that made him change his mind,

One of my favourite players growing up, i thought he was class at his peak..

Much better all round player than lampard for me, easily..

Possibly Englands best in the last decade along with the likes of ashley Cole..
Top players who could have went anywhere at there best..

Looking at those squads to where England are now, they are the worlds biggest under acheivers..
    Good!

I remember Gerrard saying he wanted to go to Chelsea as well. Not sure what changed his mind but it was almost a done deal at one point.

Also England have never come close to winning anything with Gerrard in the team, and they weren't unlucky they just weren't good enough.
