You can get in too deep thinking about it though. Like im thinking about Keane/Vieira/Toure and similarish style of player box-to-box good defensive and and decent going forward players but for me Vieira and Keane played more consistant and were more disciplined but then you do think that Toure tries to take on more attacking/goalscoring responsibility for his team yet it makes him more of a liability defensively but is that adding or taking away from Man City.

Same with Gerrard, he's never played in that good a team he's always tried to drag the team up a level or two and I agree he does attempt the 'hollywood' more often, passing or shooting which can lead to loss of possession etc but then again does he need to do that as what was his other options... pass to Kuyt/Babel/Henderson/Markovic apart from Alonso and Suarez he's never had like 2/3 Fabregas/Henry/Bergkamp/Pires' in his team at any time.

In short if Gerrard had Rooney, Giggs, Van Nistelrooy, Keane, Ronaldo, Beckham's around him would he attempt the Hollywood.

Likewise if Toure had Cole, Ljungerg, Pires, Wiltord, Bergkamp, Henry playing fast counter attacking stuff, would he have played a more disciplined role like Vieira.

Ovverated yes, but he is in the top 3-5 of all time premiership midfielders.

What we really need is a list of the top 50 for us to decide IMO

Nah, Toure is just a lazy *. It doesn't matter who he has around him, it's just his personality.

At Barcelona though he was sensational in a disciplined holding role just winning the ball and covering, the best around at the time for me.

for me this is my reason for considering him the best central midfielder of the premiership era all the other players mentioned as possibly the best in that position played with other world class players in very successful teams , where as Gerrard carried a mediocre team for long periods of time , not only was he there best player but a leader amongst men and also has about 114 international caps more than scholes and lampard.

also on the flip side of the coin could a toure carry such I mediocre team when partnered along side someone like danny murphy

I think it's absurd to say he's overrated.

He'll always have doubters though as he never won a lot.

The one big thing in his favour is the 2005 Champions League, Maradona is wanked over because they 1986 World Cup people saying he dragged an average team to win it. Gerrard will probably get the same treatment in 20 years time when people look back to that.

    * saying "how the * did a team with Finnan, Traore, Riise, Smicer, Luis Garcia, Kewell, Baros, Cisse win the Champions League against Cafu, Stam, Nesta, Maldini, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa, Kaka, Crespo, Shevchenko"

Are you really going to write off Luis Garcia's contribution to that campaign, despite the fact that he scored the winning goal in the round of 16, the quarter final, and the semi final?

He was a decent player actually played really well for them but he wasnt that good a player. Same as the likes of Kuyt, they're not CL winning class players.

'Gerrard best midfielder ever in the EPL'
    'Gerrard was world class'
    'Scholes didn't dominate'
    'Vieira wasn't great technically'

Car crash of a thread :smiley-laughing002:.

Would you rate Gerrard as an EPL winning class player?
