He wouldn't get into the real team tbf , in a attacking sense he's not better than kaka or ozil and defensively he's prob on par with diarra and khedive and hes not as good a playmaker as alonso

Think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, Me and Kris think one thing and Badger and others think differently.

He's not on part with them defensively as an all round player yes but not defensively. I agree with everything else though.

Dont know about that. I think he'd get a game beforre Khedira or Diarra, maybe even Kaka.

For Man City he would play before Milner, Barry, De Jong, Nasri or Johnson

None of the bolded players are better than Gerrard.

Gerrard when on top form is still top 10 midfielders in the world. He is one of a very select group of players who can pull up a whole club or national team by their boots and win trophies single handedly.

He's not past it either, he has peaked of course as is nature but he's still got more years, goals and trophies in him.

I know you support Liverpool so there's 0 point arguing with you mate.

I don't think Gerrard will win anything else.

What's he pulled the national team through? Another crushing defeat? Another * tournament campaign?

Top 20 for me at a push(on form over the last couple of seasons), top 10 at his peak but never the best midfielder in the World at any point.

I happen to be one of those three. Facts are facts, he's a broken player that can't play at the top level anymore, so even saying he's world class is completely daft.

World class at picking up a pay check, while doing half a job, aye.

Can't play at the top level? Yet he scored a hatrick against Everton just a few weeks ago and pretty much won the game single handed in a league that is by many considered the best league in the world.....

I know you support Barca, so touche lol!

Anyone who doesn't see Gerrard's class is biased against him and/or Liverpool, rather than the insinuation you're trying to make that I/we only rate him because we're Liverpool fans.

Even Messi hasn't won a Champions Legaue all on his own, now of course i'm not saying Gerrard is better than Messi, but that should be just one example of his quality. He's easily top 10 best midfielders of the last decade.

Gerrard was the only England player who really turned up at the last WC, the best of a bad bunch so i'm not using that as an exmaple of his genius because it would be foolish to do so, but Gerrard on many many occasions has literally ALL ON HIS OWN won games, finals, and trophies for club and country.

As others have already said in this thread, no one is disputing his ability to pull it off on occasion, but he's not the kind of athlete he was in his early twenties, at all, so you can't judge him differently than others. He barely gets pass marks as a footballer, these days.

Unless he gets over his injury trouble, I imagine he'll retire early.

Stand behind what I said earlier in the thread.

Gerrard is not overrated, he has the ability to lead on the pitch, his presence alone seems to inspire other players around him.

Alot of the players on your list are very good footballers but don't have that leadership quality and determination that Gerrard has to take the game of the throat and take it to the opposition, alot of players you've named, yeah they might be awesome when their team are 3-0 up with fancy tricks and getting on the ball to create chances but when it really matters, in them crunch games alot of them don't influence the game and go missing, that's what seperates good players from 'Top' players.

Gerrard has been Liverpool's saviour for more years than I can care to remember, West Ham FA Cup Final 2004? Last minute, Gerrard get's the ball, most players won't play the easy ball out wide, Gerrard, took the responsibilty and took the shot on from 30 yards, bang, Liverpool go to to win in Pens.

Champions League Final 2005, Istanubl, he came out the second half and literally, single handed changed the game in Liverpool's favour.

I think to say 30 people are better than Gerrard is just harsh and not fair, very few people on that list have played in some of the matches Gerrard has played in and won almost single handed. He is a leader on the field and his passing range and threat going forward makes him one of the greatest midfielders in the world, like I say, very few people I would say are 'better' than Gerrard in terms of what he offers to his team individually.

Just last night, his first goal, pure quality, most people would have put their foot through that and hope for the best, perfectly hit curler in the net, I would love for one of our stat men on TalkCeltic to find out Gerrards pass success and total assists since he joined along with total goals scored, Lampard may get more goals but Gerrard has far more to his game but going forward, influencing matches and defensively.

In a game in which is becoming more steadily more demanding, as the number of matches go up, the nature of the sport changes, etc. It is men like Lionel Messi who play full seasons (over 200 games in the last few years, scoring in most) that deserve to be called world-class, not guys like Gerrard who has only played 20 times this season, 24 the year before that, and he'll be 32 years of age in a couple of months, so I don't see that improving.

Bit of a joke and disrespectful towards hard-working pros.

Last decade maybe. Right now no. Not a chance.

Istanbul was 7 years ago mate. And he's won nothing with England. Messi has won more with Argentina.

The best league in the world that the top best teams in it couldn't get out of the group stages of Champions League and then got pumped out of the Europa convincingly? That best league?

Come on its nowhere near what it was. Its the 4th best now.
