He did give him the money. Rod Petrie refused to deal with us - we offered £500k more than Burnley and he point blank refused.

We would have needed to pay £5m-£6m back then and he just wasn't worth that.

He did not sign for Burnley till the summer though? IMO 4 million would have been enough

We offered £4m in January and we offered it again in the summer. Petrie point blank refused.

Aye I thin they just didnt want to sell him to us.

Fletcher even came out in the papers saying he wanted to sign for us, players basically never do that. He must have knew they weren't letting him.

Thought we offered 3 million in January and then we did not go back in for him since TM wanted to sign MAF and he was 3.7 million. And then he signed for Burnley for 3 million.

I remember him doing that, but I can't remember us offering 4 million for him or they wanted the same as what they sold Brown for if that was the case we should have paid it to be fair.

Fletcher told the Sunday Mail: "I'm excited at the thought of moving to Celtic Park. I'm ambitious and would love to play for them.
"I'm at a stage where I want to win things and play in the Champions League. Celtic will give me that chance. For the development of my career it is time to move to a bigger club. It will help me and improve my chances of playing for Scotland."
He added: "I've been in the Hibs first team since I was 17 and have enjoyed every minute. Hibs have been good to me and I will always appreciate that – but it is time for me to progress and I hope that is taken into account."

"Steven is extremely disappointed and feels let down by Hibs," said Scott Fisher, the player's agent. "Hibs were unwilling to give Celtic a concrete figure so we were unable to conclude a deal."

Paatelainen has no fears over the Scotland striker’s motivation. The Finn said: ‘I can understand the player. I have been a player myself and players are ambitious; they want to experience European football, the Champions League and Celtic are a massive club.

Fletcher, Strachan and Lawwell have all said we had from January a deal worth £500k more than what Burnley offered and Rod Petrie was still bitter about the Scott Brown deal and how we first approached the Fletcher deal and just point blank refused to deal with us.

It's also why we've not had much contact with him since. A lot of animosity between him and Lawwell.

I'd take Fletcher in a heartbeat. Great player.

Am I the only one who would be completely baffled by a move like this?

Paying 6M for a player (good as he is) who will most likely get injured again and who would be on at least 40k a week...

meanwhile in the summer we let finnbo slip through our fingers for the same fee... younger, fitter, better goal record with lower wages?

Lawell baffles me sometimes he really does.

Aye I think we * them about a bit over Brown and Thomson, we probably wanted a double deal for £4-5million but they didnt want to, also Thomson wanted to join us and if you remember they put Thomson up for sale and Hibs must have expected us to buy him since it was us he wanted to join but it went on for weeks and he eventually joined the Huns without us bidding for him, we probably tried to * them again by leaving him there until the summer and getting them cheaper.

Hibs won really though as they ended up getting £2million for Thomson and £4.4million for Brown when we would never have paid £6.4million for them. We also won as well as Thomson was never any good and would have been a waste of an extra £1million or so.

I think they believed we unsettled Brown by dragging out the negotiations from the January to the put he signed, early in the summer, which left them with an unhappy player and put them in an awkward position. They got excellent money for him though - so can't complain.

'Finbo' wasn't the same price though. The time it was rumoured he was that price they never had a board to put a bid into, by the time they had one Cardiff were sniffing about and they were talking £10m.

I wouldnt rate him as a £6 million pound player and would be shocked if we spent that money on him.

I think in reality you would be talking £8m but that was where they were looking as Cardiff had just signed Cornelius for £10m.
