BRENDAN RODGERS has refused to rule out a shock move for Steven Caulker — after revealing he is helping him beat his demons.

The Celtic boss is supporting his former Swansea player as he battles gambling, depression and drink problems.

Rodgers admits he is a massive fan of QPR defender Caulker — but insists the 25-year-old’s health is the sole priority.

He said: “I spoke to Steven as a former manager. The kid messaged me. He has been suffering for the last period of time and he looked to me as someone who looked after him when he was 19.

“I was only too happy to reach out and help him.

“We spoke at length about his life, his situation and where he’s at.

“He’s a boy that, if he can get it together and find a peace, then he is an awesome talent.

“He is 6ft 3ins, quick, strong, he can play. You would take him to WAR with you.

“Steven is unbelievable in both boxes. He is an incredible young footballer, but he is suffering.

“Having had experience in trying to help him then, I was only too happy to do that. At this stage there is nothing more than that.

“He is obviously a QPR player.

“I was only too happy to speak to him and help him try to shape his life.”

Rodgers could be in the market for a centre-half with Dedryck Boyata out for the next three months.

He has already added Jonny Hayes, Kundai Benyu and £4.5million Olivier Ntcham to his squad this summer.

And Rodgers insists the signing of French kid Ntcham proves the Hoops mean business in Scotland and in Europe.

He said: “Hopefully. For me, it is hopefully a signature that allows us to kick on over the next couple of seasons.

“I was asked to come here and help Celtic dominate Scottish football and qualify for the Champions League and European football and for that you need players.

“With Olivier, I’ve been looking for this type of player for about a year.

“One of the key things I recognised when I came in was I needed speed and power in the team.

“We brought in Moussa Dembele and we got Scott Sinclair and then I felt in midfield, especially at the highest level, it is very important to have a high level of technique with that speed and power.

“With Olivier being 21, like Moussa, he has that hunger to succeed. He has great qualities and this is a perfect environment for him to develop.”

I don't think that immediately rules out any potential move in the future.

Wanted this one to happen when we were linked with him last year. An excellent defender who's lost his way but we all know how good Brendan is at getting players back to their best. Really hope he signs.

Plenty of footballers struggle with drink, gambling and depression. Says a lot that he's had the strength to come out publicly.

We would have a great bunch of centre backs if Rodgers builds Caulkers confidence up.

That is all in my opinion anyway that Caulker is missing, an arm around the shoulder. I reckon Brendan would get this boy feeling loved again and playing his best football. With Rodgers behind him and him thriving from out great support I think he'd go from strength to strength, really can't see how this wouldn't be a fantastic acquisition. Really hope it happens.

For someone struggling with depression gambling and alcohol problems, Glasgow is the perfect place to go :fear:
Seriously though, I remember when he first broke through, he was a top defender.
Admittedly, I haven't been watching too much English football this last few years so I couldn't tell you much about where he's at now, but if we can get him back to his best and even improve on that, then I think we could be on to something good here.
No better man than BR to turn him around either.
I don't see it as a big risk either, I'm sure it'll be a fairly low fee, if any?!

If he finds form I think he will be bang on and Boyota might struggle to get his place back. Posses a goal threat too.

Maybe a change if scenery would do him good, possible loan deal for the last year of his contract and see where he's at after that..

Great defender on his day, and as has been said if there's one manager to get you enjoying your football again it's Brendan.

Could be a shrewd signing, even if he wasn't on top of his game I think he'd be fine at SPFL level.

Let's be honest if he gets even a touch of form back he'd stroll the Scottish game.

An absolute unit, leader at the back, goal threat and monster in the air. He has enough to handle anything up here.

Looking at the few videos of him available, he was captain in so many. Captain of Cardiff in the prem at age 22..

Can't get enough leaders in the team. We've relied on Broony far too much in that respect.
