Agree. I have been criticising Starfelt, but he have been consistently good in the best defence in the league for quite some time.

It’s actually disrespectful claiming Welsh is a better defender :56:

He's certainly worth having as a squad player. Sure at least 2 centre backs are ahead of him but too many times over the last 5 years I've had to see Bitton play as a defender because we only had 3 Centre backs.

Another I'd like to see out on loan.

Realistically don't see him starting long term.

If we can get a good fee then great.

Hes a good squad player but I don't see the levels in him that others do.

I find it very hard to envisage him ever being no1 here.

Murray has far more potential and should be seeing minutes before him now.

Gets a very rough time on here. He's the perfect 3rd choice and he has plenty of time to get better

Don't really get the negativity with him tbh. When Starfelt was struggling we were calling for Welsh to start. Now he's not so good?

I think he's a solid defender who I'd have no problem with if called upon.

Some were. They were wrong then and they still are now.

Welsh is a big drop off from our usual two centre backs.

He’s still a fair way off the prime age of a CB. He’s only 22 so I think he’s still got room to improve, think he definitely needs to get stronger and possibly a bit sharper. When you look at CCV and Welsh, that’s what Welsh needs to be targeting.

Ange yelling at him today to stop passing backward has put people on alert which is a bit unfair. Ange is trying to get him to develop by pushing him, no need to jump on his back.

Not played in a while so was def rusty. He's in the mix for CB rotation in a club that plays 60+ matches a season.

Or is he another one we should chase out the club. Bcos we are definitely getting a European class, international defender to play 3rd choice.

As a fourth choice CB he would be fine but I don’t see him ever being good enough to be first choice. In a team that is already on the small side he is small for a centre back and gets outmuscled or out jumped too often. He is ok on the ball but given his lack of physicality he isn’t that good on the ball that it make up for it. He’s also not slow but he hasn’t got great recovery pace either again that doesn’t make up for the other areas he lacks in.

If Julien can get himself back fit, Welsh drops down to fourth choice and my only worry then is does he occupy a space in the squad that one of the younger lads who has more of a chance of becoming a first team player get blocked?

I don’t think any are ready right now hence why I am content to keep Welsh but don’t follow it closely enough, it’s a pity Hjelde didn’t want to stay as he would have been a good fit for our current team. Lawal looked good too but has disappeared completely for months now whatever has happened to him.

I liked the look of him.

Felt he handles things seamlessly for an 18 year old. And he's huge.

No question about that. Given the heavy game load we play every season IMHO we need at least 4 senior center backs at the club and I would say even a fifth option there just in case. If CCV signs a long term deal and stays we have him, Starfelt, Welsh and Jullien as your 4 senior center backs with Scales capable of playing there as cover potentially. So no question for me Welsh while not a starter is an important member of our squad over the course of a season.

I really like him. Good defender but like Starfelt a bit dodgy on the ball. He’s 3rd choice for now behind CCV and Starfelt obviously but their is plenty time to still develop more. Getting thrown in every now and again isn’t easy but when I’ve seen him have a run of games he’s been solid enough,

It isn't even just for us. I've watched him for the Scotland under 21's and he really doesn't look good at all. Positionally he's miles away. Isn't that good or comfortable on the ball either..

Definitely looks like he has more potential..

Lack of pace and on the turn was very evident in our pre season game's though....which may hinder him..

It isn't about getting a european class international defender to be 3rd or 4th choice. I think if people dont think we could improve on him, then we should be worrying.

I've said before that I'm happy to have him around and there probably is room for some improvement, however I think he has some glaring deficiencies that will take work to overcome.

I think the gaffer likes him though.

The fact people think it’s either Welsh or European class international centre half shows how clueless some people are.

If we had a European class, international defender they’d be starting.

There’s a multitude of levels between Stephen Welsh and ‘European class, international defenders’.

Nowhere near good enough for the level we want to be at.
Don't see why so many rate him so highly.

If he was playing at an Aberdeen or Hibs and we were linked with him people would be up in arms

Think it worked in his favour that he came in while we were a total shambles, particularly at the back.

Don’t think he’s a bad player, but I also don’t think he’ll ever be good enough to establish himself as a regular in any half decent Celtic side. If we got a good offer for him in the summer we should definitely be cashing in.

Few weird comments about him after the Raith game IMO.

He’s a good squad player who’s young and will get better. The fact there was even interest from Serie A proves his European performances have been reliable and solid enough for scouts to take notice.

Gets bashed a bit too much for me.
