An on form Johansen would be our best midfielder IMO.

So whilst I agree McGregor deserves to be playing just now, I would have no issues with Johansen playing either. If we are going down the road of having a lynchpin holding player dictating tempo and 2 box to box midfielders in front of him he is a perfect fit for the role. As long as he recovers his form.

    Absolutely nothing. :smiley-laughing002:

The two things are completely unrelated. You might as well say Efe Started yesterday so is a better player than any of the Barca subs.

He was voted the best player by the fans, his fellow players AND the media.

It was no fluke and if you think it was you are deluded.

    Are they?

Or are they related to the point it is one of a number of things which proves Johansen is the better player. Along with his Norwegian and Scottish POTY titles.

Not saying it was a fluke, but it was that 3/4 month period at the turn of the year that won him it. Over the course of the season he was certainly not our best player.

    I don't believe they are.

I have never been that impressed by Johansen and would take McGregor over him every day of the week.

McGregor has been pretty poor in the last two games. If it were Johansen who performed like that folk would want to "give him away for nothing" and sine die from Celtic.

Johansen did struggle last season, as did a number of players for that matter.

Johansen has quality and I reckon the type of player Rodgers would like to have in the side. Given the opportunity he could well recapture the form of the previous season.

Big difference between playing poorly in one competitive game and then one half in a non competitive game against one of the worlds best and playing poorly for months

Big difference between playing poorly for months and playing poorly your entire Celtic career. At least Johansen has had impact in key games for us. Asides from the rare goal, McGregor really doesn't offer anything.

MC Gregor was actually one of the bright sparks in a dull season of football. He didn't throw a strop when he was benched and fought his way back. He is in the squad on merit and the team play more directly when he's on the pitch. So it's not all about scoring a couple of goals.:50:

The only one I can think of is when he set up two goals at home to Malmo in the CL play off.

McGregor has scored plenty of good goals in Europe against similar, if not better opposition though so I don't really see the point in that argument.

really don't rate him, he has a decent engine and can score the odd goal but his passing and technical ability are subpar at best for me.

2014/15 14 goals and 10 assists, pretty sure you could pick out some across the season - assists in games like the league cup semi and Inter spring to mind. Still managed 9 assists last year despite having a poor year generally.

Just to be clear I'm not a Johansen fan but I just don't believe McGregor is a better player, isn't technically good enough to play as a 10 and doesn't have the physical attributes to be a convincing number 8. The odd goal/assist asides against SPFL opposition he hasn't stepped up in big games. The frustrating thing with Johansen is he is capable of so much more, probably why he generates so much dislike.

Having said this, just been looking at the stats and given both players over their first 60 odd appearances for Celtic they're very similar. Think I might give McGregor a bit more slack although I don't think either will be the long term option in a deep midfield role

Johansen, in his early 2015 form, is far better than McGregor. No doubt about it. But right now McGregor is the better player, and has been for months.

Neither of them should be starting in midfield for Celtic though. We need better. Far better.

    That's not how it works.

The reality is Johansen is the better player in worse form. Being in poor form doesn't mean you became worse it football, it means you're in poor form.

Both McGregor and Johansen, at their best, are good enough. McGregor in particular is getting better all the time, despite a couple of sketchy recent performances and poor passing.
