Actually agree with this tbh. He's not the best infront of goal.

Swap Johansen for Commons against Barca and who performs better? Commons has next to no defensive capabilities, he was a cog in a very successful wheel that night. Not downplaying it or him but it's true.

He's scored and assisted crucial goals but Johansen has shown in a year he'll contribute far more on a European level.

That's my point, their net contributions may be more/less or the same but that's what I'm getting at.

Johansen's inability to play the DM role effectively, highlights the need to strengthen this position.

Who knows mate, what I do know is Commons did do extremely well that night. That's just what I'm getting at, Commons has done very well in Europe for us from getting us into the Champions League to working his * off against Barca to scoring the penalty that took us through to the last 16.

Now Johansen has some great attributes to play for us in Europe and I fully agree that he will be vital for us there.

He just hasn't done it at that level yet.

Hope he can contribute more than Commons because Commons has done well for us in Europe.

Straight choice next Wednesday, who would you play?

    Hopefully both play next Wednesday.

I'm worried about where the goals are going to come from slightly and Commons is one our bigger threats. Needs to play IMO.

    As does Johansen.

I'd play both in the home leg but only Johansen in the away..

Both are best through the middle though in the AM position, if GMS and Armstrong had started the season better there would be a decision to be made, with probably Commons dropping out, for me though both should start on Wed.

Commons next Wednesday. The following it would be Johansen though.

Don't know why it needs to be a straight choice though, I'd play both.

Commond in the hole behind striker and johansson on the right. With his work rate he can play there no problem. Gms or forrest for the final position. Commons is a big game player and will produce if he plays!

I like what we were doing last season, with both of them switching and covering for each other. Worked brilliantly.

Why Commons at home and Johansen away?

Sorry I thought I was in the Malmo thread

I'd have both, both games but we need to win at Parkhead, Commons is a game winner.

Top European goalscorer in the team at the moment.

Commons and Johansen would be 2 of the 1st names on my team sheet. I think commons is playing sort of like how juan mata is at united- an inverted right winger who can pull the strings. For me commons is way better than GMS and has done it at the highest level in europe. Both must start both legs for me with probably forrest on the left after his performance last night.

Johansen had a poor game last night he gave the ball away too easily at times and was a bit part player. He wasn't the only player but I expect a bit more from him.

I find that baffling. Especially considering if it is a straight choice you and I both know Johnansen is a guaranteed starter whereas Commons isn't.

Purely hypothetical to see who you think is better for Europe, linked back to my original post where I seen numerous people say he should be dropped for Malmo. Which I find laughable.

I'd play both but that's immaterial to what I'm getting at.

Because I'm hoping we're taking a lead over there, Johansen's ball winning ability and energy will be priceless away from home in Europe.

I know he would because it isn't a straight fight, I think Commons scores more goals and is more creative. I think we struggle with scoring and creating clear cut chances without someone like Commons in the team. I don't know why you find me thinking Commons is a bigger goal threat baffling.

We bith know that I haven't said anything against Johansen being dropped, only contradicted you saying Johansen has done more in one year in Europe than Commons has in for. Which is baffling because he clearly hasn't.
