Sadly this was my impression also. After having my heart broken by the prequel trilogy and the animated series, went into this deliberately avoiding all the hype as to no get my hopes up. Yet by the films end, even with these lowered expectations, still walked out of the film at its end very much unsatisfied, far from convinced that this was the rebirth, the reaffirmation, the connection with the original trilogy (and am not just talking about reprised roles and easter eggs here and there, most of which seems completely incidental to the story being told) and most importantly, the failure to rediscovering here of what made that original trilogy arc so great.

Since 1983 the bar has been set increasingly lower and lower. Is this the film that turns it all around? I don't know... But if it's purpose was to not be that film and only it's catalyst which then sets the stage for the next 2 films to really resurrect this back to that level then this may temper my view of this film in hindsight when those are eventually rolled out, and cast it in a new light. However as a stand alone film it just has too many flaws in it's story and pacing to make it even close to what is could and probably should have been.

Disappointing, deeply unsatisfied and far from convinced.

All of which means will need to sit through it again. Not to pick it apart - which could quite easily do right now - but to consciously seek out what positives there are to take from it.

I loved it. The people who claim it was * and didn't live up to the originals obviously haven't seen them in a long time and still remember the * it's 19 70's and there's laser sticks on my screen! I watched all 6 before hand one after the other over 2 days. It's comfortably the best new one made and easily is comparable to the 4 to 6.

Just all about when you were born I think and when you watched the films.

I quite enjoy the originals but I don't love them because they are so dated. If I was at the cinema in '77 watching A New Hope, I'm sure I'd love it.

The only things that really did much for me in the originals were Han Solo and Darth Vader. I instantly prefer Poe, Rey and Finn to Luke Skywalker and Leia.

Load of *, i am 24 so i was not alive when the original 3 were made and they are vastly superior to the one just brought out.

It just didn't feel like Star Wars for me, there was no connection being developed with the new characters apart from the black guy, thought his part was very well done. Rey, i just didn't believe her at all.

It either had to be one or the other, a new film taking it in a new direction or a real homage to the original 3 and it did neither for me.

As i said as a stand alone film it was decent, best of the lot so far? Not in a million years.

Opinions aside, it's just factually incorrect to say it wasn't a homage to the originals. It's a beat for beat remake of A New Hope.

I realise that, i meant they included both, as in an homage and trying to be the beginning of a new trilogy. They needed one or the other, both being merged just didn't work for me.

Needed one or the other? So either a full on remake with Vader, Death star etc. or just a new film with no Han Solo in it or Leia etc?

Both of them would be completely stupid.

Ah right sorry I misunderstood. I'd still have to disagree personally, I thought they got the mix more or less right although did lean a wee bit heavily on the side of doing Episode IV all over again, but it pulls through on the strength of the new characters. What I liked about this film was that it had great performances of great new characters, in what we know is the already established to be brilliant Star Wars universe. I saw a review that said it's the first Star Wars film without a weak performance and I'd go along with that.

Strong performances? Finn was good but Rey was most certainly not, didn't believe her performance at all it was weak.

I feel Abrams got it a lot better with Star Trek, there was a great improvement in the second film, I'm hoping this will be the same.

Really? I thought she was good. Not sure what wasn't believable about her to be honest.

Man, we couldn't disagree more.:smiley-laughing002: Thought Star Trek was much better than Into Darkness.

I think episode 8 will be an improvement. This was setting things up really, the next one will step up a notch.

Thought it was great, even though the biggest scene was spoiled for me I enjoyed it.

Dying to go and see it

Dont know if this is spoiler worthy or not but I still think the major death will be Han. I can see him being the Obi Wan of this film, sacrificing himself to save the young ones. If he does die I think Lando will come back and take the falcon with chewie.

Biggest IMDb cliché I have ever seen. If this movie was the worst you have ever seen, you probably don't see a lot. :smiley-laughing002:

Just came home from the cinema.

Story wise, it all was kind of familiar. (Was like a best off from the first 3), but all in all wasn't disappointed at all. All the scenes with X-wings and Tie-fighters and the Millennium Falcon in it were absolutely stunning.

Going to see it again soon, but than in 3D D Atmos.
