Loads of people in Donegal call Americans, and especially Americans, who call themselves "Irish" plastic paddies. There is a lot more Anti-American sentiment in Ireland today than there ever was. There was a time not too long ago when John F Kennedy and even Ronald Reagan to some were considered heroes.

Today, they generally cringe frightfully bad whenever they come across one of these "Im Irish" American cretins. ESPECIALLY the young Irish.

Considering I come from an Irish family (as in from the * country), and a real Irish family, you should know that I know quite a lot. I spent loads of summers there in Donegal in my youth last I was there was less than 2 years ago.

Mate what 'Irish' people do you associate with then, in all honesty. Most Irish people, especially the young are acceptive of any nationality and anyboy's claim to irish heritage. As in the fact that many of these people's friends and nieghbours have went abroad seeking employment due to the financial dire straight of the country.

To call someone a plastic paddy is on par with calling someone a 'foreigner' there are plenty 'Irish foreigners' in other lands so the Irish are the one nationality that should fully respect foreign nationals

    Normal people.

Here's the thing. They're right. However much they joke about it. And its mostly a joke to them. They're not really being mean or nasty.

If you are foreign born you're not Irish. Not even a tiny bit. You're of Irish descent.

Being "Irish" and "Irish descent" are totally different things. I don't like it when Americans claim to be Italians or Greeks or whatever else myself.

A have aye, a doubt you've ever done a bit of boxing in your life. You can clearly tell.

It's easier said than done trying to keep someone like Mike Tyson at bay mate wake the * up, the guy was ferocious. I have his full fight career on DVD and watched them like a hundred times, and how you can say Mike Tyson had nothing in his locker other than a left hook is baffling:56::56::56:

He was convicted aye. Why would I need condone it to have him as my avatar. I'm am boxing fan enthusiast. I loved him as a boxer, he's one of the greatest of all time that's why he's there.

Whether I'm biased or not a don't think he done. Let's be honest he wouldn't be the first guy to be falsely convicted on something. But he was convicted so a want argue way that, therefore he is a rapist. But still doesn't take away from excellent boxing skills he once had.

A jewish person can be declared as jewish, a catholic can be declared as a catholic, an irish man unless they were born in the country cannot be thought of as an Irish man ... even if they have the same beliefs and feelings as the majority of Irish men and women. I know these examples are religious, but I think it holds relevance in an argument I am trying to make.

How about we tighten up the criteria to claim on Irish hood, and say unless you have lived periodically in the country as in 1+ year in the last 2 years, you're not Irish anymore. How can someone determine what another feels and what they identify with?

The only real Americans had their land stole from them by the white European settlers. There are citizens of the United States of America, and other countries on the continent (America is a continent remember - not a country.)

Irish American,Italian American,African American are terms which seem more appropriate,it's exactly what their descendants were, and because of the racial inequalities and black oppression of the last several hundred years, still are.

Jim I appreciate the sentiment, I really do. But your nationality is not a religion, friend. I always said that my heart belongs in Ireland. I love Ireland just as much if not more than the average Irishman. I believe that you can have "Irishness" about your personality without claiming to be "Irish" yourself. For me, my Irishness is my loyalty to my family, my heritage, and my race. But in the end I was raised in America, it was America that made me who I am today. I owe everything to this great Nation, and America is my country. To be born in this country and to deny your country your Patriotism is the ultimate insult to this great land, in my opinion.

Fair enough mate, but I doubt that is the same for many 'Irish-Americans', their 'fatherland' heritage and sense of belonging is Irish as they believe American is essentially 'historiless' in the fact that it is founded by European settlers

The Indians never had a Nation here man. They were divided and killed one another and constantly warred with each other. In fact, they came to North America across ice from Siberia to what Alaska is today, and down-with the continents. They were immigrants, themselves. Even if they were the "first" here. Our Nation has a proud and rebellious history from our declaration of Independence in 1776, to our victory in the Revolutionary War, and our proud tradition of individual liberty, justice, and military might. And let me tell you, pal, most of America's great triumphs, both military and civic, were made possible by America's native born sons. Come here to America and talk to the "Irish-Americans". You will find that most of us are extremely patriotic and proud to call ourselves Americans.
