Sol Campbell will do a fantastic job up here for 2 years. He's still got it, Arsenal want to keep him ffs.

He's an absolute solid, experienced player. His experience alone will be a great help to players like Rogne, Thompson and to a lesser extent O'Dea.

If we had somebody like him playing next to McManus when he was coming through I can guarentee he'd be twice the player he is just now.

We have been crying out for a BIG defender that doesn't * about , for a couple of years now. Sol would stroll through games up here. His experience would be good for everyone at the club.
    Hope this happens.:50:

You don't half talk nonsense at times.

Rangers brought in an older centre-half than Sol who was nowhere near Sol's class and he has strolled the SPL for the last three seasons.

The EPL may be overrated but some of the guys we are being linked with will definitely improve the team.

If we can sell McManus to Boro then the fee and the saving in his wages over two years would go a long way towards paying Sol's wages for two years and I can't believe you will try and tell me McManus, Loovens, Hooiveld or Rogne are better than Sol Campbell.

Exactly, we need an experienced CB, our own Weir if you will. Sol fits the bill perfectly and is better than Weir.

Lennon is not going to take the chance mobray did, he will install leaders who are proven in Britain first Like oneill did. He does not possess the cash oneill had so loan deals and free transfers are the way to go.

As far as signing "pensioners" goes centre halfs can play into their 30s if they stay clear of injuries and look after themselves, the best centre halves in the world are all over 30 IMO, so Campbell is not a risk by any means. A 2 year deal would be a fair contract that gives him 2 years with all of the promising young defenders at the club.

Bullard is a risk due to his injury record, but if we manage to get him to stay injury free we have hit the jackpot as he can roll up his sleeves and get stuck in, and combines this attitude with natural ability that allows him to skip by players with ease, thread passes others don't see and can score 30yard free kicks and find the corners of the net from the edge of the box, something not one midfielder at the club currently posses.

Don't be too downhearted by these signing targets Gunt, you may end up pleasently surprised.

Agreed. Most of the signing rumours I've heard are players from England.

Worst possible idea imo. Most overpriced market in world football.

It's worth considering that he has looked after himself and should seriously be able to deal with most threats in the SPL considering his achievements and experiences as a player.

    Davie weir is nearly 40!!

Age is not an issue if they can still do a job, Campbell is still pretty quick, he has played at the highest level all his career, there is absolutely no chance we could get a guy like this if he was 10 years younger, he would command a fee in excess of 20m in today's Market.

Weir is the most influential player at ibrox and has been one of the most consistent players in the last 3 years, Campbell will be even better and he will chip in with a few goals as well.

Right Big Sol is 35 with a ton of top flight experience, built like a brick * house, superb positional sense, being chased by the third best team in the premiership.

But the question on everybodys lips is has he got the legs to step up to the level required of an SPL defender.

Oh and check the date on that article.

No too shabby for an old codger ae? Davie Weir eat yer * heart out.

All this banging on about Davie Weir is annoying. Weir is an aberration, he's pretty much the only player in his position that anyone can bring up as evidence that playing till your 39/40 is achievable at the top level (if you can even call the SPL 'top level'). He is the exception to the rule, rather than the benchmark that everyone seems so keen to point too.

Like Gunt I too have reservations with regards to the signing targets that we have been linked with, some of which are confirmed. Some of these involve selling the family silver (Aiden) in order to bring in players that will have a short shelf life, large wage and no resale value. It has reminded me of 'them' selling their merchandising operation for 10 years for a large lump sum up front, with * all in the medium to long term.

Thing is right now we need the short termism.

We need to win the SPL this season and next. If we get 2 in a row and manage into the Champions League 2 years in a row we are so far ahead in financial terms that Rangers will be crippled for at least the next 4 to 5 years. By then we can keep getting the money.

Right now we have the chance to do what Lyon done with the French League they were in a fit financial state and the rest of the league wasn't a couple of Champions League gold pots and they were way ahead of the rest.

This is what we need to do and players like Sol Campbell would do that for us.

Other than that I can't see one donwside to the Campbell deal, he is hugely experienced and everything we have been missing for years.

He is still fast, excellent positioningm don't see him missing a lot of headers, an out an out winner and leader on the pitch.

And he is on a free and would command wages around the same bracket as Scott Brown? Where is the downside.

Weir has been a success at Ibrox because he has looked after himself, looked after his body, and uses his experience and reading of the game to make up for his lack of speed, just like Lenny did for us in his latter years as captain with us.To stop Weir getting skinned for pace the Cardigan has always paired him with a younger and fitter fellow centre back like Bougherra, Boomsong, and Cuellar, and made sure he had full backs with pace like Hutton, Bougherra, Smith and Papac.

We can do the same with Sol Campbell who is no slouch, by having Rogne, Hooiveld or Loovens alongside him, and Cha Ri and Mulgrew have the height and speed to support Campbell too, so in theory it should work.
