[IMG] Celtic: Hopeful that Sion will be punished for their actions

Sky Bet

The Scottish Football Association has promised to back Celtic in their endeavour to be reinstated in the Europa League.
The Hoops lost 3-1 on aggregate to FC Sion in their play-off tie but with the Swiss side having signed five players they should not have because of a transfer embargo, the Scottish giants could win back their place in the European competition.
Uefa president Michel Platini has already condemned Sion's breach of rules and the Scottish FA has now pledged to give its support to Celtic.
"Celtic made contact with the SFA, as any member club would do, and the SFA have been backing Celtic," said president Campbell Ogilvie.
"The case is being heard this week and as a governing body we would always back one of our clubs in one of these cases.
"If there is a breach of rules, then Uefa will certainly take whatever sanctions necessary, but the SFA would certainly back a member club in this case.
"The nature of football now, with regulations and legalities, means it is quite a complex issue. I haven't been involved in the detail of it but it is quite evident that there are a lot of legal issues being addressed, but these will be heard this week I believe.
"The decision is for Uefa but if someone has breached regulations and has been proved to have breached regulations, then obviously a sanction should be taken, but that's obviously outwith our remit."
Celtic captain Scott Brown too is hopeful that Uefa will make a decision in their favour.
"They played three players who shouldn't have been allowed to play and at the end of the day you can't do that, and hopefully Uefa can see that as well," stated the midfielder.

IMHO they would always back us or any member team in this situation despite whatever differences we've had in the past. If they didn't then it could have an adverse effect on the other members.

The fact they made it pupblic says it all really.

I'm starting to get a bit of stomach churning when I think about all this. I mean it was said last week - Friday I think it was - that a meeting would be held on Tuesday about this. Now that we see rumours that a meeting isn't scheduled at all? :97: Mind you, I am seeing a connection that the rumours that say a meeting isn't scheduled seem to be coming from the Swiss areas though.

They can't delay this because the group stages start soon and plus it will just turn into an absolute farce if they delay it. They never delayed the Fenerbahce decision so why should they delay on this?

I will agree as well that UEFA can be very unpredictable but surely they cannot go against their OWN rules about ineligible players? I mentioned before that if Sion don't get punished or only get a fine or whatever then it will leave the rule open to abuse by other clubs. It will just get farcical because where would they draw the line at a a club only receiving a fine to being punted out?

Thanks a lot for info, Silvan.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Looks pretty much like none of them want to assume any kind of responsability here by leading out and take a decision :nonono:

Well, UEFA just cannot wait for CAS and/or Swiss Court to take a decision if they delay it till after the start of the group stage. So they have to take their own decision beforehand, and in my opinion they have no choice but to stick to their competition regulations cos anything else would just be completely absurd!!

So I´d expect them to confirm their view that Sion players were ineligigle, thus throw them out and reinstall us. Still, I have to admit that right now there´s much more hope than faith in what I say here...

Platini himself I think it was said that a decisions will definitely be made before the group stages start. I'm pretty sure that he said that it a meeting will be done for Tuesday as well. If it wasn't Platini that said that part about the meeting for Tuesday then someone from UEFA said it because I remember reading it on Friday/Saturday.

Yeah, I read that too, but the fact that the Swiss Court have now delayed their decision may have changed this. If that info is correct, I mean, as I haven´t found anything official on this...

However, as I said, UEFA have to take a decision before the start of the group stage. But they might want to delay it as long as possible, meaning that:

1) we won´t be able to lull any new players in by saying "we´ll play in Europe this season" as the transfer window will be shot by then;

2) more important, UEFA will think through this again, and consider all the consequences:
- if they keep Sion in, and the Swiss Court confirm their own decision (which is quite likely, I assume), then Sion play in Europa league, thus won´t ask for any compensation, and Celtic will have no right for compensation as they never qualified;

- if they put Sion out and reinstall us, but Swiss Court confirm their own verdict in Sion´s favour, then UEFA will face a compensation claim from Sion which might well cost them millions.

So they might choose to take the lesser of two evils (from their point of view), which would make themselves look like * fannies - but that wouldn´t be the first time...

even if we do get back in, (which i'll be happy about), FIFA should be ashamed, this should of been dealt with earlier. and now that it hasn't, if we get back in were stuck with sion's hard group because they were in pot 4 it's * *!!

I reckon the SFA must know something ! To come out publicly now and say they are backing us , looks good on them now if we are reinstated. Have they been tipped the wink by UEFA ? Why wait till the day before to say they back us ? SFA backing Celtic, * i better go and put some lottery numbers on !! :87:

Think it's more the fact that UEFA & FIFA are on board regarding Sion being booted out. It took to the day before the Court of Arbitration announces it's determination that the SFA have jumped on the bandwagon.

Typical SFA - leading From the rear. :38:

I know mate.the more I think about it,I feel we are being shafted all roads.fair enough we should have beat them but the bottom line is they fielded banned players.I know people are saying they weren't messi etc but again they made a difference so why should we be penalised with a tough group and accept it as it makes it look like we are happy just to be involved but our chances would have been greater if we got a fair draw.on the other hand it's a great 6 games to look forward too.

They do need to get it done quickly yeh because of the group stages but they surely just can't let it drag on till then.

Fenerbahce are appealing the decision against them but they won't be reinstated to the group stages of the Champions League IF their appeal is upheld but they never qualified either - yhey were in the play-off's for the Champions League just like we were in the play-offs for the Europa League. IF Sion are left in the competition then Celtic can surely try and appeal as well, because why should Fenerbahce be able to appeal and not Celtic? Fenerbahce wouldn't be appealing if there was nothing in it surely.

So a decision has to be made, and hopefully it will be the correct one of reinstating Celtic. I'm not saying that just because i'm a Celtic supporter (although a big majority of me is :icon_mrgreen:), it's because Sion fielded ineligible players and have "broken the rules", and that WAS quoted by Platini himself, along with "what is happening there is the rules have not been respected....FC Sion has not respected the rules of the transfer ban - they signed players and then played those players". So if Sion don't get punished it will make UEFA look REALLY stupid in all of this, especially with what Platini said, and rules will be there for the breaking by other teams.

What I don't understand though is how can the Swiss Court have precedence over UEFA, THE governing body of European football? I mean that would be like a small claims court trying to over-rule a high court's decisions would it not? Swiss Court can maybe appeal the case or whatever for Sion but the main decision has surely got to come down to UEFA. And FIFA for that matter as they are involved in it as well and they will look stupid in it all as well if they don't do anything about it.
