Something to do with him being a zombie I've heard. Makes his movement lethargic. [IMG]

It is diabetes Dev, & one of our greatest players (as you know), carries it, & advice
    from him will be invaluable.

DANNY McGRAIN conquered his fear of the unknown about diabetes and went on to have a brilliant career at Celtic.

Last night he tipped Hoops signing target Scott Allan to easily combat the illness which medical advances have stripped of worry.

Dundee United’s Allan is the most sought-after young prospect in the country, with the Old Firm and West Brom vying for his signature.

Nobody is perturbed by the fact Allan injects himself with insulin daily and McGrain insists that’s because diabetes doesn’t hold the same fears it did when he was diagnosed with the condition in 1974.

McGrain, who still coaches Celtic’s youngsters at Lennoxtown, said: “It was unknown for a footballer to have diabetes 37 years ago.

“I was scared when told I had the illness and there was no one in football I could turn to for advice.

“I hated injections and thought the idea of having to put a syringe into various parts of my body twice a day was an impossibility. But Scott will have been well schooled because of the medical advances that have taken place since.

“I used an old-fashioned glass syringe whereas Scott will have one of the modern pen-shaped devices that make life much easier.”

Allan was diagnosed as a kid, shortly after joining Dundee United, and is still only 20.

Danny was a first-team player at Celtic and a Scottish international when told he was diabetic. He can laugh about it now but also recalls the inner fears he endured.

He said: “Diabetes never caused a problem with my football – apart from the fact it made me never to have a shot at goal for Celtic!

“But it was a journey into the unknown. Even the great Jock Stein, my Celtic manager, couldn’t advise me on how to handle something that was new to a footballer.

“But the hospital staff told me about how mountaineers and golfers had got the better of sticking a needle into a fatty part of the body like the tummy or the backside.”

McGrain even became a man to be consulted when, out of the blue, Spurs’ Gary Mabbutt phoned him.

He said: “Gary played in an FA Cup Final that went to extra time, during which his two feet froze and he had no feeling in them.

“We communicated for a long time after that chat and Gary was a good ambassador for diabetes sufferers. He looked after himself well and had a successful career.”

McGrain would never go so far as to say diabetes was a good idea but with proper supervision it can have a positive side-effect for a player.

He said: “You must eat the correct foods and take proper drinks at the right time of day. That healthy lifestyle is just right for a footballer.

“The only thing to be aware of is a hypo-glycaemia attack, which is caused by sugar levels dropping and can leave you staggering about.

“But medical science means Scott will cope easily with the condition.”

Apparently Ronny said that Allan has talent, is a nice guy and trains well but he just doesn't suit his style.

    Why * sign him then?

Ronny imo wanted us to play like Real Madrid, were he wanted fast, fit players for counter attacking like 2 fast wide players with Johansen in the hole but it hasn't worked out because he's made a * of the wide positions(Wakaso, Tonev, GMS etc) and also been unable to get a striker also Joahansen turned to * and we ended up mostly playing Rogic who has no pace and now we're just a weird mix of a team who don't play creatively enough because he probably still wants us to play with high tempo and pace but our squad is more suited to possession and creative football.

He could still have had success here had he used players like Bitton, McGregor, Armstrong, Allan, Rogic, Roberts, Christie and Stokes in his midfield and let them be lazier(not too focused on their fitness stats and running etc) but play creative possession stuff which they are all suited to and good at.

    :frilly:

Tell him to hold out for the new incoming manager. Hopefully he'll get a fair chance.

Wasn't good enough. I'd have liked to see Christie on the left and Allan in the hole. Looked like we'd maybe of had more joy like that but no excuses, he was poor..

Nobody has a hard on for him. Just been plenty of people pointing out that he should have been given more of a chance. And he should have.

He was pish tonight but come on, he's had 2 starts in like the last 4 months and both of them have been out on the left. * Ronny at it again.

Every game he's played for us he's been on the left. Same as Armstrong although Armstrong did get to play in the middle 2/3 times last season.

Dont know why there is any surprise that he isn't that good. We signed him from second tier Hibs ffs. Ciftci, gms and Armstrong were all playing at a higher level when we signed them and look how good they have turned out to be.
If he was as good as some on here were saying then even Ronny would have had the sense to play him.

Classic Deila, loves playing people out of position.
