You get tariff points for your grades, it's mostly for foreign students to convert their exam results abroad into tariff points

    http://www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/tarifftables/

    http://www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/factsheet/sqa

That should explain the tariff points in regards to Scottish qualifications

Yeah you need 3 highers and 2 ints or better. (They might also accept 2 highers and 4 ints for example)

Tariff points are how many points each qualification is worth, don't know what they are for each level but for example. Foundation - 5, General - 10, Credit - 15, Int 2 - 20, Higher - 30, Advanced Higher - 40. The higher the level the more points.

It's not as simple as Higher 30, you get the most for an A then B and so on

I don't think standard grades have anything to do with it either

Yeah probably, it is basically converting your results into points so its easier to compare. Instead of thinking for ages about whether an A at a higher and 4 Int's are better than just 3 B's at higher.

There is something for standard grade, I got points for it last year although it might be a different thing, but there are definitely points awarded for it.

Cheers for the replies guys. Im not the cleverest guy in the world but 3 highers and 2 int2s shouldnt be a problem.

well what do you think of it mate? Is it:

    Difficult?
    Remotely Interesting?
Useful for jobs? (that you know of)

i like it, find it quite interesting. its a combination of maths and theory, but a bit more theory than maths. so if your not fantastic with numbers then you could rely on the theory bit to understand it. think its one of these things that you either understand, or you dont, so a lot of people think of it as being really difficult whilst those that understand it and can do it find it challenging enough for it to be interesting.

as for jobs, theres hundreds of jobs that economics would get you into: banks, government, international organisations like the EU, financial services and a whole host of other private sector companies too. youd be hard pushed to find a better qualification for employability. plus there was a report done about graduates, economics graduates were the highest paid and highest employment rate of all the business type degrees in the UK, better than accountancy.

so id say its definitely worth a bash in school mate.

Well done pal. Got mine today as well. Absolute chuffed with mine. Had 6 exams in January, 3 resits and 3 others. They were all close together as well, like 2 in the same day, and 4 in one week, so it was hard work getting the right mentality and not switching off after one exam was over, as another one was on its way. Got 3 A's and 3 B's.

At AS (first year) I left with CDDD now I've upped them to ABBC with one B 3 marks away from an A, and the C 2 marks from a B. With a bit of luck I could get AAAB at the end of the year! The results make me happy, but the most best thing is seeing that my parents are proud of me, and it's a GIRFUY to a teacher who thinks I'm really thick, now I'm a couple marks of an A in that lesson!

    Alright bhoys,

I have applied for Mechanical Engineering and have so far received Unconditional offers from Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Has anyone got any advice or personal experience of the course/any of those Universities? I don't really have a clue where I should go, although I like the idea of living in Glasgow!

    Cheers!

My cousin goes there so just texted him and he texted back. He says that the teachers are excellent, the percentage of students who go in to work within 6 months of finishing their course is in the high nineties, the halls are *.

Have a look at the league tables for Mechanical Engineering and see which of the four is highest. That would help me decide. Obviously the decision of where you would be staying as well is quite big. I don't know where you stay the now just 'Scotland', the cost of moving away from home with rent, living expenses etc and if you may get homesick are also factors to take into account. It's a big decision so good luck

Appreciate that thanks, that sounds pretty good to me! Apart from the halls but I wasn't expecting luxury I suppose! :icon_mrgreen:

strathclyde is the best uni in scotland for engineering. i live with 4 mech eng students, all really enjoy the course and know that their course is better than any other in scotland. tbh mate, youd be a fool to even consider anywhere else.
