Was in a pub in country NSW about 20 years ago. A mate and I were on a road trip and on the first night were staying in Inverell. Got chatting with this local bloke, seemed like an OK guy, and we suddenly realise that other blokes in the pub are yelling * at him and it looks like getting nasty.

We ignored it for a while, but then the bloke says: You guys better go sit elsewhere because this is about to get nasty.

We resisted at first, but then the situation became so scary - with a large number of * obviously intent on beating * out of the bloke - that we allowed ourselves to be persuaded and stepped aside.

It was an extremely difficult situation. On the one hand, we wanted to stick up for a bloke who seemed a decent chap, and his gesture of telling us to leave his table so we didn't get involved was unbelievably noble. On the other hand, for all we knew he'd ripped off money from the other blokes, or raped someone's little sister...

We left the table and immediately this big * steps forward and starts to hassle him really badly. I tried to intervene, but the big * says to me: You want what he's getting?

I backed down, and sure enough, it kicks off and the bloke we were chatting to gets * trashed.

I can't remember the next couple of hours, but my mate and I got pretty smashed and felt as weak as * for not helping the bloke, even though we didn't know him and there's absolutely nothing we could have done to help against so many.

So, having been scared shitless a couple of hours earlier, we were now * enough not to give a *, so we went looking for the blokes who'd bashed the OK guy. We eventually found them in the most evil dive in town and, despite knowing what the consequences were going to be, I just marched up to the big * and belted him in the mouth.

I'm probably lucky to be alive, 20 years later, because it was the worst smacking I ever got. But it just goes to show that shame + alcohol can overcome the most terrible fear.

But I still don't know whether the first bloke who got bashed was a decent fellow or a thieving paedophile.

Slipped my mind at the time, but I was only 20.

If it happened today I would certainly ask for references, and if they proved acceptable, may well glass his * assailant.

Me and my mates got attacked by a group of Italian Hooligans when we were 16, they had crow bars, bike chains and Knifes. We were there playing waterpolo of all things ffs. Luckily only one of us got hospitalized
